Travel English -  Starting a conversation

One of the best ways to enhance our travelling is to communicate with other people, locals or other travellers.

The best time to talk to someone is when they are not moving, for example when you are standing in line, or when you are sitting down on a bench or a nearby table. It’s best not to stop someone when they are walking on the road. 

Here are some generic phrases we can use to start a conversation:

The weather is so nice today. 
Are you from around here?
There sure are many people here today!
Are you here on business or on vacation?
Are these  your kids? They are so cute!
What kind of dog is that? ← Only if they are holding a dog

Travel English -  At the Airport - Announcements At The Gate

Hello everyone,

One of my students told me recently that it is very difficult for her to understand the announcements at the airport. Actually I think it is very hard for most to understand them as airports tend to be very noisy places.

In any case, for your convenience, I prepared some announcements we usually hear at the airport.

“There has been a gate change.”
“Japan Airlines flight 330 to Helsinki is now boarding.”
“Please have your boarding pass and identification ready for boarding.”
“We would like to invite our first-class and business-class passengers to board.”
“We are now inviting passengers with small children and any passengers requiring special assistance to begin boarding.”
“We would now like to invite all passengers to board.”
“This is the final boarding call for Japan Airlines flight 330 to Helsinki.”
“Passenger Zhang Xi, please proceed to the Japan Airlines desk at gate 4.”

I’d like a first class ticket to Cambridge please.　ケンブリッジまで一等席を1枚お願いします。
Single or return?　片道ですか？往復ですか？
Return please.　往復でお願いします。
That’s eighteen pounds fifty please.　18ポンド50ペンスお願いします。
When are you traveling?　いつ乗りますか？
Leaving tomorrow morning and coming back on the afternoon of the 15th please.　行きは明日の朝、帰りは15日の午後でお願いします。
Would the 9:05 from here tomorrow and the 15:10 from Cambridge on the 15th be okay?　明日の9時5分当駅発と、15日の15時10分ケンブリッジ発で、よろしいでしょうか？
Yes, that’s fine. Thanks.　はい、それでいいです。ありがとう。
How long will it take to get there?　着くのに時間はどのくらいかかりますか？
The train arrives in Cambridge at ten o’clock so it’s a fifty-five minute journey.　電車が10時ちょうどにケンブリッジ着なので、所要時間は55分です。
Which platform do I need?　どのプラットフォームから乗りますか？
It leaves from platform 7.　7番ホームから出ます。
Is the train express, or does it stop at every station?　特急ですか？それとも各駅停車ですか？
Does the train have bicycle racks?　電車に自転車用ラックはありますか？
It’s a commuter train, so I’m afraid not.　通勤電車ですので、あいにくですが、ございません。
Does it take me directly to Cambridge?　ケンブリッジへ直通ですか？
Yes, it’s a direct route.　はい、直通経路です。

one of the things that I find quite difficult when travelling is taking a bus. Actually when I first came to Fukuoka I avoided taking the bus at all costs. as it was impossible for me to communicate with anyone and I had no idea where each bus was going.

These are some expressions to help you with taking the bus when travelling abroad.

Which bus goes to Tenjin?
How often does bus number 15 come? 
When is the next bus to Hakata station?
Does the bus to Canal city stop here?
Where do I catch the bus to Yakuin station?
Is this the bus that goes to Nakasu? (when you see a bus coming)

  • It’s a 3 hour layover in Hong Kong. The entire journey will take 22 hours.
  • Okay, and does the price include tax?
  • Yes, it does.
  • Okay, I’d like to book that please.

I found this website a little while back that I wanted to share with you. It’s a collection of very beautiful (but very expensive looking) hotels from all over the world.

Out of curiosity I checked the hotel in Mie, and found out that the price was about 350,000 yen per night. That’s a little bit too expensive for me but I hope you guys can afford it. (If so, please don’t forget to buy some extra tickets too!!)
