Hi there! It’s Friday and the weekend is here! Nice! For most of you that will mean time for a beer, but not for me this weekend because I’m sick of it!

To be sick of something means to be bored with it and not want to do it anymore.

For example, I got sick of the drama halfway through and stopped watching it.

I don’t feel like drinking beer anymore,  I drank too much in the holidays and I’m sick of it now.

なぜならもううんざりだから！

sick of ～で、それに対してもううんざり、もうやりたくない、したくない、という意味です。
例えば、
ドラマを途中まで見たけど、ほんとにつまんないから見るのを辞めた。
もうビールをこれ以上飲む気分にならない、休暇中に飲み過ぎたからもう今はいらない。

I’ll be posting some heart idioms for a few weeks, first one is lose heart and it means to become discouraged.

lose heart:  to stop believing that you can succeed
He was almost about to lose heart when he received the most wonderful news.
心を失う：上手くいくと信じるのを止める
一番素晴らしい知らせを受けた時、彼は危うく心が折れるところだった。

Hi again! Because we are on holiday this weekend I will be showing you a new English expression rather than giving you the lowdown on this weekend’s lessons.

Today’s expression is “spring fever” which means feeling restless or excited as the spring comes in.

For example…
I think my kids have a case of spring fever today, they’ve been running around the house like crazy all morning.

Hello there! Today’s wonderful English expression is also connected to the time of year and it means to be young.

Strangely though we hardly ever use it to describe someone’s youth and instead to talk about the fact that we are getting older.

For example

“Just climbing the stairs to my office wears me out nowadays! I’m no spring chicken anymore.”

The third difference in spelling between American and British English is the  –ISE / -IZE ending as shown below: 

アメリカ英語とイギリス英語の三つ目の綴りの違いは、英単語の語尾に見られる、–ISE / -IZE
のスペリングの違いです：

American spelling avoids -ise endings in words like prioritise, realize and recognize. British mostly use the –ise ending though the –ize is also used at times.

UK: analyse /organise/ prioritise / realise/ recognise
US: analyze /organize/ prioritize / realize/ recognize


3) -ISE と -IZE
 アメリカ式綴りでは、prioritiseのように、単語の語末を -se とすることが避けられ、realize、recognizeのように綴られます。イギリス英語では、ほとんどの場合 -ise が語末に使われますが、 -ize が使われる場合もたまにあります。

UKはイギリス、USはアメリカ：
〜を分析する／組織を作る／優先順位を決める／〜に気付く／〜と認識する

Hi there everyone, today I will show you a word that we use in British English but I have never really heard Americans use and that is “gutted”.It means highly disappointed and this fits in quite nicely with our weekend topics in Akasaka and Ropponmatsu because we tend to use it when we are talking about having bad luck. 

For example

I was gutted after Scotland lost 4-1 to England at the football.

My friend was gutted after she failed her driving test for the 4th time.

A second difference in spelling between American and British English is the -er / -re ending as shown below:

UK : theatre/ centre/ litre/ metre/ calibre
US: theater / center / liter / meter / caliber

AMERICAN ENGLISH SPELLING AND BRITISH ENGLISH SPELLING
 There are quite a few differences in British and American spelling. In British English the spelling of words absorbed by other languages (Latin or Greek) has in many cases been kept intact while Americans in many cases changed the spelling to better reflect the pronunciation of the word.

 Here are three notable differences:

 1) WORDS ENDING WITH –OUR / -OR
Most words ending in an unstressed –our in British English end in –or in American English.
UK : Colour/ flavour/ harbour/ labour/ neighbour/ rumour
US: Color/ flavor/ harbor/ labor / neighbor / rumor

イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の綴りには、かなり多くの違いがあります。イギリス英語では、他の言語（ラテン語やギリシャ語）に吸収された単語の綴りが、そのまま残っている場合が多く見られます。一方、アメリカ英語では、単語の綴りが、より実際の発音に即したものに変えられていることが多いです。

特に大きな違いを3つ挙げてみます。

1) 語尾 -OUR と -OR
イギリス英語では強勢の置かれない -our で終わる単語が、アメリカ英語では -or で終わることがほとんどです。
UKはイギリス、USはアメリカ：

Hi there everyone, are you getting tired of winter yet? I know I am and with spring just around the corner I’ve decided to introduce this phrase today.

“have a spring in your step”

Have a spring in your step means that you seem to be in a great mood for one reason or another and it can be used like this..

“Have you seen Jaimie today? He’s got a real spring in his step, I wonder what’s got him so excited!”

“John has had a real spring in his step ever since he started dating Lisa!”

Hi there everyone, last week in Jaimie’s English study advice blog he advised you to practice phrasal verbs, so I’ve decided to show you a few different phrasal verbs using come!

come up with- have an idea

I couldn’t come up with any new ideas for my presentation, so I asked a friend to help me out.

come along- progress

We put our heads together and now work on the presentation is coming along nicely.

come over- go to someone’s house

I suggested we work at the office, but he said he would rather come over and work at my place.

come down with- catch the cold or flu

Work on the presentation was coming along nicely, but my friend has come down with the flu so we’ve put it on hold.

プレゼンテーションの仕事はうまく進行していましたが、友達がインフルエンザにかかってしまったので、仕事を保留にしています。
