ビジネスでよく使われる「Wrap up」の３つの意味

クリスマスが近づいていますね。
クリスマスについて考えるとき、少なくとも子どもがいる人にとっては通常はプレゼントのことも考えます 。
そのプレゼントは非常に多くなる可能性がありますが、いつもそれぞれラッピングされて (wrapped up)います。
今回はこの「wrap up」という言葉の３つの意味についてご紹介していきます。
「wrap up」の意味１：包む
「wrap up」とは、何かを紙やその他の素材で包むことを意味します。
プレゼントを包むのはもちろん、レタスを冷蔵庫でしっとりと新鮮な状態に保つためにキッチンペーパーで包むときにも「wrap up」が使えます。
[例文]
Would you like these presents wrapped up?
(これらのプレゼントをラッピングしますか？)
You better wrap that lettuce up with kitchen paper so it stays fresh.
(そのレタスをキッチンペーパーで包んだ方がいいですよ。そうすれば鮮度が保たれます。)
「wrap up」の意味２：暖かく着込む
「wrap up (暖かく着込む)」も「包む」とよく似ていて、クリスマスにとても相応しい言葉ですね。
この場合の「wrap up」は、自分や他の人に暖かい服を着せることを意味します。
[例文]
It’s freezing outside, better wrap up well!
(外は寒いから、しっかり暖かく着込んでね！)
「wrap up」の意味３：完成させる、締めくくる
「wrap up」はビジネスでもよく使う言葉です。
何かを完成させる、締めくくるという意味になります。
「wrap up (包む)」という文字通りの意味からきています。
プレゼントを準備しているときに一番最後にすることは、そのプレゼントをラッピングすることです。
そのため「wrap up」は何かの最後の段階を表しています。
[例文]
Ok, let’s wrap things up for today.
(では、今日はこれで終わりにしましょう。)
これは、会議の最終段階に入っており、終了する時間が近づいていることを意味します。
We hope to wrap up the negotiations at the next meeting.
(次回の会合で交渉をまとめたいです。)
これは、次回の会合を最終会合にして交渉が決着することを望むことを意味します。
I have met them for a few days but there are still some issues we need to solve before we can wrap up.
(彼らと会って数日経ちましたが、まとめる前に解決しなければならない問題がまだいくつかあります。)
この文にある「wrap up」は、完了に達することを意味します。
この場合、それは取引である場合もあれば交渉である場合もあります。

Christmas is just around the corner, and when we think about Christmas we usually also think about presents (at least for those of you with children), and a present can be a very large number of things but it usually comes wrapped up.
Cover or Enclose Something
So to wrap up means to cover something in paper or any other material. While you could of course wrap up a present, you could also wrap up a lettuce with kitchen paper to keep it moist and fresh in the fridge.
Ex. Would you like these presents wrapped up?
Ex. You better wrap that lettuce up with kitchen paper so it stays fresh.
Dress in Warm Clothes
Very similar to the meaning above and also a very appropriate word for Christmas, wrapping up can also mean dressing ourselves or others with warm clothes.
Ex. It’s freezing outside, better wrap up well!
Wrap up in Business English
Wrap up is a word we use a lot in business. It means to complete or conclude something. It takes this meaning from its aforementioned literal meaning. The last thing you would do when ordering a present is wrap it up, so wrapping up signifies the last stage of something. Here are some uses.
Ex. Ok, let’s wrap things up for today. (This means that we are entering the final stage of the meeting and it’s almost time to finish)
Ex. We hope to wrap up the negotiations at the next meeting. (This means that we hope the negotiations will be concluded at the next meeting making it the last meeting)
Ex. I have met them for a few days but there are still some issues we need to solve before we can wrap up. (Wrap up in this sentence also means reaching completion, in this case, it could be a deal, or it could be negotiations)
