Honestly I really like writing this blog, I think it’s partly because as my wife always tells me I really like talking about myself!!

I think one of the most important turning points in one’s life is when they finally discover their life’s purpose and together with that, discover their voice. Maybe for some people it’s easy, some people may know from a young age what they are destined to become and accomplish in life but for others, including myself, their journey discovering themselves, finding their purpose and their voice are more complicated and lengthy affairs.

For myself, I think the turning point was about 9 years back, when my daughter was a baby. I was 34years old at the time and I was thinking of what I had accomplished in my life so far, the sad answer was that I really hadn’t accomplished anything. If anything, I had been a chronic underachiever, I was embarrassed of my work, the places I worked for, the no effect I had on anyone’s life and I was terrified of my daughter growing up and realizing what a loser I had been all my life.

At that time, without any evidence that I could pull something like that off and without anyone believing I could do it, I decided that I would become successful. It’s hard to convey exactly what my thought process was at that time and it was difficult to imagine what that success would mean but I made the decision that I would be successful and I decided that nothing would stop me until I reached that goal.

I still feel like that now, I have my goals and I won’t allow anyone to stop me from achieving them. My professional goal in life is to create a great company, a company that isn’t only profitable but it’s also an exciting, fun and challenging place to work in. A company that can act as a platform for our employees to work hard, be creative, challenge themselves, set lofty targets and be able to achieve them. A company that our employees love and are proud to work for, a company that good work is rewarded both mentally and materially. A company where hard-working teachers and staff can earn enough money to take care of their families and children. A company that would be widely recognised as the best English school to both study and work for in the country.

I know it’s a big goal and creating a great company is actually pretty hard, I had a small brainstorming session with Jaimie yesterday and we identified 4 things that are going really well and 23 (23!!!!) small or big problems our company is currently facing. I’m sure though we’ll achieve our goal, after all we have already decided to!

正直なところ、私はこのブログを書くのが大好きです。そう思う理由のひとつとして、私の妻はいつもこう言うのです。「あなたはは本当に自分のことを話すのが好きだ」と。

人生の最も重要なターニングポイントは、人々がついにその人生の目的と内なる声を見つけた時だと思うのです。

おそらく一部の人にとっては簡単なことかもしれません。若い時から自分は何になり、何を成し遂げるべきかを知っている人もいます。でも、私を含めそれ以外の人々にとって自分自身を見つけ、人生の目的とその声を探す旅は長く複雑です。

私自身、自分のターニングポイントは9年前、私の娘がまだ赤ちゃんの時でした。私はその時34歳で、今までの人生で成し遂げたことについて考えていました。何ひとつ成し遂げていない、答えは悲しいものでした。むしろどちらかと言えば、いつもいまひとつでした。仕事や職場に関しても恥ずかしい程度、誰かの人生に良い影響を与えることもありませんでした。そして娘が成長して行くことを不安に感じ、私は今までの人生でずっと敗者だったことに気がついたのです。

そしてその時、例え何の確証も無く、誰も私ができると思っていなくても、私はやってのける、私は成功するんだと決意しました。

その頃は私の考えやプロセス、つまり成功イメージを正確に伝えるのは難しかった。でも私は、目標を達成するまでは何が起こってもストップしないと決めたのです。

今でも私はそう感じています。私は目標を持っていて、その目標を達成するまでは誰も私を止めることはできません。私の人生におけるプロフェッショナルな目標は、利益を得るだけではなく、エキサイティングで、楽しくて挑戦心を持って働ける、素晴らしい会社を作ることです。

その会社はスタッフが一生懸命働き、クリエイティブに自己に挑戦し、高い目標を達成できる環境としての役割を果します。愛とプライドを持って働くスタッフと良い仕事は、精神的にも物質的にも報われるはずです。一生懸命働く、講師やスタッフは家族や子供達を養うのに十分な報酬を得ることができます。その会社は勉強、仕事どちらにも最高のスクールとして国内で広く認識されることになるでしょう。

こんな素晴らしいスクールを作ることは大きな目標であり、とても難しいことだとわかっています。私は昨日ジェイミーと小さな会議を行いアイデアを出し合いました。そこで私達は、現在の私達の会社のとても上手く行っている４つの事と、大小含めて23(23個も！)の課題を明確にしました。私達は目標を達成すると確信しています、つまり私達はもう決めたのです！

Hello everyone,

Since our topic for this week is animals and pets, I’d like to introduce you to an animal related idiom. It’s “one trick pony” and it means that someone or something is only good for one particular purpose, or at doing one particular thing.

So for example

Ex. Product A is great but we don’t want to be a one trick pony, we have got to be able to create something new and original.

Ex. Kensington is definitely not a one trick pony, we can teach adults and kids for a wide variety of targets at a very high level.

ケンジントンでのできごと - 雙葉学園GCコースのためのインターナショナルコース

Since July this year, we have started a new more advanced course for our kindergarten girls that are interested in passing the GC test in Futaba. The GC course is one of the very few bilingual courses on offer in Fukuoka for elementary students (there are only 2 at the moment) and as such is very popular and is getting harder and harder to get in.

Entering the GC course is really a life changing experience as it allows your kids to become truly bilingual, I think it’s a fantastic idea as it opens up a new world for our children.

We have a few students that are going to take the GC test on Nov 8th and recently we have been stepping up our efforts to help them maximise their chances to pass the test.

Our girls have worked so hard, have improved so much since we started that pass the test or not, they are winners! Personally it’s been a privilege working with them, and seeing them try to do their best day in day out.

今年の7月から、雙葉学園GCコースにご興味をお持ちの幼稚園生のお子様向けに新しい上級コースを始めました。GCコースは、福岡ではとても数少ない小学生のためのバイリンガルコース（現在のところ２校のみ）であり、非常に人気のため入学はどんどん難しくなって来ています。

GCコースに入学することは、あなたのお子様が本物のバイリンガルになれる、人生を大きく変える経験になるでしょう。私はそれを、子供達の新しい世界を広げる、素晴らしい考えだと思います。

私達の学校には、11月8日にGCコースのテストを受ける数人の生徒達がいます。そして最近は彼女達がテストに合格するチャンスを最大限にする為に一層の努力を傾けています。

彼女達はとても一生懸命やっていて、始めた頃に比べてとても上達しています。試験に合格しても、もししなかったとしても、彼女達は勝者です。毎日毎日、ベストを尽くそうと頑張っている姿を見ると、彼女達と共に取り組むことを誇りに思います。

Do you ever find yourself looking back at a time in the past with fond memories, wishing you

were there instead of here? Well, I have two idioms you can use to sum all that up:

‘I remember playing football in the park, those were the days’ - We remember that great

time of playing football and we kind of wish that we could do it again in the same way

‘Do you remember the good old days when Freddos cost 10p’ - ‘Freddos’ is a small

chocolate bar in the U.K which is fated to cause controversy whenever its price is inevitably

increased. Whenever it does increase in price some people will reminisce on a simpler time

when things weren’t so expensive.

I hope you enjoy using those idioms.

日常で使える英会話表現　－　“Shake things up”＝物事をシェイクする！？実は良い意味の英語表現

“Shake things up” = to change things a lot, usually quite quickly. It’s a positive meaning.

“A new teacher just arrived in our school, and she’s really shaking things up.” From this sentence, I get the sense that everything was always the same in the school for a long time, without much change. Maybe everyone had a routine and it was a little boring. The new teacher maybe has new ideas, new habits and is making big, positive changes to perhaps her class and the teaching style. From this expression, I get the idea that things are starting to really improve and people are really happy she has joined the school. Maybe it has a lot of benefits for the students too!

“Shake things up” ＝物事を大きく変えること、たいていの場合かなり速く

前向きな意味があります。

「新しい先生が私たちの学校にやって来た。彼女は本当に（変化の）旋風を巻き起こしている」この文から私は、この学校では長い間、大した変化もなく、全てがいつも同じであったのだろうという感じを受けます。毎日同じことの繰り返しで、少々退屈だったのではないかと。新しい先生は、きっと新しいアイデアや新しい習慣を持っていて、彼女のクラスや指導方法に、大きく建設的な変化を起こしているのです。私はこの表現から、物事が劇的に改善・向上されはじめ、人々は彼女が学校へ来てくれたことを本当に喜ばしく思うのだろう、と想像できます。きっと、生徒にとっても、すごく有益なことだろう、と！

A good word to use in these times (unless you are working for Amazon/ Netflix or some other online service company and then you should be slowing down on those champagnes) is that business is slow.

Unfortunately for us too in Kensington, business has been super slow since the pandemic started but the good news is that our spirits are high. One pandemic may slow us down but it ain’t gonna beat us!

Having said that, hopefully business is going to pick up again soon!

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介：Hi!私はTimと呼ばれています。（ティム講師）

Hi everyone, 

My name is actually Timos but everyone calls me Tim nowadays and I have started getting used to it although I think Timos sounds better (and slightly cooler).

As you probably know, I was born in Greece in the capital city of Athens. I grew up in two suburbs of Athens; the first was called Vrillissia and the second Dionysos. Greek names probably sound very funny to you, but please keep in mind that Japanese names also sound funny to Greek people.

When I was a young boy, I was as skinny as anyone could be. I’m not sure why I was so skinny but it’s almost certainly a combination of some really slim genes from my parents and my very picky ways when it comes to food. I loved playing sports and video games when I was a kid. Actually I loved playing sports and video games when I was a teenager as well. 

When I was a young boy, my mum used to speak to me in English; my mum was an English teacher (and later she became a famous writer in Greece). She thought learning English would be very important for me and well she was totally right as, as you probably know, I also became an English teacher. So thanks mum, wherever you are.

My mum passed away 3 years ago and it was the hardest time of my life; when you lose a family member, you lose your roots, your history; It's really like losing a part of yourself. If nobody knows or remembers my childhood except myself, it’s almost as if it never existed, and certainly nobody now cares about it except maybe myself.

So please show love to your parents people, you’ll definitely miss them when they’re gone.

みなさん、こんにちは。

私の名前は実際はTimosなのですが、最近はみなさんTimと呼ぶのでそれに慣れてきています。でも私はTimosの方が響きが良いと思っています（それに、ちょっとクールです）。

ご存じかとは思いますが、私はギリシャの首都のアテネで生まれました。アテネ郊外の２つの町で育ちました：１つ目はVrillissia、２つ目はDionysosというところです。ギリシャ語の名前は、多分みなさんにとってとてもおもしろく聞こえると思いますが、日本の名前もギリシャ人にとってはとてもおもしろく聞こえることをお忘れなく！

私が少年だったころ、私は誰よりもか細かったです。なぜぞんなに細かったのかわかりませんが、ほぼ確かなのは両親からもらったものすごくスリムになる遺伝子と、食べ物となるととても好き嫌いが激しかったことを合わせた結果だということです。子どものころはスポーツをすることと、テレビゲームで遊ぶことが好きでした。あ、10代になってからもスポーツとテレビゲームが大好きでしたね。

私が若いころ、母は私に英語で話していました（私の母は英語の先生でした--その後彼女はギリシャで有名な作家になりました）。母は、英語を勉強することは私にとって大変重要だと思っていました、まぁ、彼女は正しかったと言えますね。ご存じの通り私は英語の講師になりましたから。だから、ありがとう母さん、どこに居たとしても。

私の母は３年前に他界しました。私の人生で一番辛い時でした。家族を亡くすと、自分のルーツや歴史を失くした気持ちになります。まるで自分の一部を失った感覚です。もし自分以外に私の幼年期を知って、もしくは思い出してくれる人がいなかったら、それはほぼ存在しなかったに等しいですし、それを大切に思うのも、今では確実に私以外に誰もいないのです。

だから、みなさん是非ご両親に愛を示してください。彼らが逝ってしまった時には、絶対に彼らを恋しく思うはずですから。

Hi everyone,

One of the expressions that we’ll be using in our classes this weekend is “have in mind” and it means “what/whom are you thinking”

For example:

Jaimie: Hi Tim, I was thinking that we should start an Kensington Employee of the Month award and I know exactly who should get the first prize for September.

Tim: Oh, that’s a nice idea Jaimie, whom do you have in mind?

Jaimie: But of course you Tim, who else?!

Tim: Oh, I don’t know man, it’s a good idea but I can’t accept it.

Jaimie: You’re such a great man, Tim.

Another more likely example:

Jaimie: Hey Tim, do you want to hang out this weekend ?

Tim: Sure Jaimie, what do you have in mind?

Jaimie: How about Chinese at that nice place near our school?

Tim: Sounds great!

Hi everyone,

We started this new blog so you can get a better understanding of what we are always doing behind the scenes to improve or grow the school, believe me when I say that we are always working on new projects, new ideas to improve our school.

Currently we are overhauling our HR system and we are starting a new HR system which we call “Kensington Careers”. It’s work in progress but our idea is to create a leveling system for both our part time and full time workers so our employees can choose how involved they would like to be in the school, what position they would like to get and also what career path they’d need in order to get to that position.

It’s quite difficult to accurately imagine our future needs but I find this project super exciting and another good step for us to attract good employees and to cultivate a culture in which they can succeed within our school!

ケンジントンでのできごと -　新しい取り組み：ケンジントンでのキャリアプロジェクト

みなさん、こんにちは。

私たちがこのスクールをより進歩、成長していくために,いつも舞台裏で何をしているのか、より理解を深めていただくために、この新しいブログテーマを始めました。

スクールをより良いものにするためのアイデアや新しいプロジェクトに、実際つねに取り組んでいるのです。

現在、私たちのHRシステム（従業員の活用、管理するシステム）を見直し、分析していて、“Kensington Careers”と名付けた新しいHRシステムをスタートする予定です。まだ作業中の段階ですが、実現したいのは、パートタイムスタッフとフルタイムスタッフ双方のためのレベリングシステムです。

それがあれば、スタッフがどの程度スクールに関わりたいのか、どの役職を目指したいかを選ぶことができ、そのためにどのようなキャリア過程が必要となるのかを知ることができます。

将来的に何が必要になってくるのかを正確に想像することはとても難しいです。

しかし私には、このプロジェクトはとてもワクワクするものです。また、優秀な（従業員）志望者を引き付け、私たちのスクールで成功できるという風土の育成・確立にとって、更なる一歩にもなると思います。
