Hello there everyone, today I won’t be giving you travel English so to speak , more like a few phrases to talk about things I did in Golden Week, which I spent in Osaka and Yamaguchi with my family.

Firstly, I don’t usually enjoy going to Yamaguchi so much but sometimes it is nice to just get away from it all relax.

There isn’t much to do in my wife’s hometown, but it was nice to spend some quality time with my kids.

As some of you know, I’m petrified of flying but this time it seemed like no big deal.

I love Osaka city, it is a bustling and vibrant place and I’ve been there many times but, it seems to have become a bit of a tourist trap in the centre recently.

It was good to see my friend from Scotland again, we hit the town on Saturday night in Osaka and had a good chance to catch up with each other again. 

Of course I got quite drunk that night and tried to walk back to my hotel from Namba to Juso. It turned out to be really far, I got lost and didn’t have a clue where I was.

I think that is probably enough for today, hope that comes in handy.

みなさんこんにちは、今日はトラベル英会話については多くを語らず、ゴールデンウィークに家族で山口と大阪へ行ったときのことについて、いくつかのフレーズを紹介したいと思います。

まず、私は普段山口に行くのをそんなに楽しめないのですが、時には全てから解放されてリラックスできるので好きです。

妻の出身地（山口）ではあまりすることはないのですが、こどもたちとはとても貴重な時間を過ごすことができました。

数人の方は知ってると思いますが、私は飛行機がとっても怖いです。でも今回はそんなに大きな問題ではなかったです。

大阪は賑やかで活気があって、私は大好きです。大阪へは何度も行ったことがありますが、ここ最近中心部はツアリストトラップ(観光客向けにどこも高い値段がつけられている)になってきているように見えました。

スコットランド出身の友達に会えたことはとても良かったです。土曜の夜に大阪の街へ一緒に出かけ、お互いの近況を報告するのにとてもいい機会でした。

もちろんその夜は酔っ払い、難波から十三のホテルまで歩いて帰ろうとしましたが、とっても遠く、道に迷い自分がどこにいるのかわからなくなりました。

今日はこのくらいで十分でしょう。

トラベル英会話ーFilling out a form/書類の書き方

Hi there everyone, the other day I was at ward office and I remembered how difficult it used to be to fill out a form when I first got here so here is what some of the things written of forms mean.

  • Sex   M/ F

M is for male and F is for female

  • D.O.B

This means date of birth. Remember that in the U.K we often give the month before the day so if your birthday is June 5th 1998 it would be 06/05/98

  • Name
  • Given/ First (name/ name)

This means your first name and middle name if you have one

  • Family/ Surname/ Last Name

All of these mean your family name

  • Mr
  • Mrs
  • Miss
  • Master

Mr. is for men Mrs is for married women, miss is for unmarried women and girls and master is for boys

  • Passport
  • current visa ( spousal, work permit, working holiday, student)
  • Insurance Number

You need this if you are going to work in the U.K

  • Address

Remember to start with flat number, building name, area, larger area, city/ county, and country

  • country of origin

誕生日のことです。イギリスでは、誕生日の日にちの前に月を書くことを覚えていてください。ですので、もしあなたの誕生日が、1998年の6月5日なら、06/05/98と書きます。

これは、名前と、もしあるのならミドルネームを意味しています。

Travel English -  Starting a conversation

One of the best ways to enhance our travelling is to communicate with other people, locals or other travellers.

The best time to talk to someone is when they are not moving, for example when you are standing in line, or when you are sitting down on a bench or a nearby table. It’s best not to stop someone when they are walking on the road. 

Here are some generic phrases we can use to start a conversation:

The weather is so nice today. 
Are you from around here?
There sure are many people here today!
Are you here on business or on vacation?
Are these  your kids? They are so cute!
What kind of dog is that? ← Only if they are holding a dog

One of my students told me recently that it is very difficult for her to understand the announcements at the airport. Actually I think it is very hard for most to understand them as airports tend to be very noisy places.

In any case, for your convenience, I prepared some announcements we usually hear at the airport.

“There has been a gate change.”
“Japan Airlines flight 330 to Helsinki is now boarding.”
“Please have your boarding pass and identification ready for boarding.”
“We would like to invite our first-class and business-class passengers to board.”
“We are now inviting passengers with small children and any passengers requiring special assistance to begin boarding.”
“We would now like to invite all passengers to board.”
“This is the final boarding call for Japan Airlines flight 330 to Helsinki.”
“Passenger Zhang Xi, please proceed to the Japan Airlines desk at gate 4.”

When are you traveling?　いつ乗りますか？
Leaving tomorrow morning and coming back on the afternoon of the 15th please.　行きは明日の朝、帰りは15日の午後でお願いします。
Would the 9:05 from here tomorrow and the 15:10 from Cambridge on the 15th be okay?　明日の9時5分当駅発と、15日の15時10分ケンブリッジ発で、よろしいでしょうか？
Yes, that’s fine. Thanks.　はい、それでいいです。ありがとう。
How long will it take to get there?　着くのに時間はどのくらいかかりますか？
The train arrives in Cambridge at ten o’clock so it’s a fifty-five minute journey.　電車が10時ちょうどにケンブリッジ着なので、所要時間は55分です。
Which platform do I need?　どのプラットフォームから乗りますか？
It leaves from platform 7.　7番ホームから出ます。
Is the train express, or does it stop at every station?　特急ですか？それとも各駅停車ですか？
Does the train have bicycle racks?　電車に自転車用ラックはありますか？
It’s a commuter train, so I’m afraid not.　通勤電車ですので、あいにくですが、ございません。
