This week we’ll be talking about Britain in our school, so it’s a good chance to learn about a British side dish that I happen to like very much.

It’s Yorkshire pudding and it’s a very common British side dish made from a batter consisting of eggs, flour and milk or water.

They are usually served with gravy or alongside Roast beef,

Sounds good doesn’t it!

Hi there,

Continuing the theme of agreeing, when we talk about food and drink pairings we use the phrase “go well with” my students often try to use “match” when talking about food but even though I understand what they mean, it sounds very unnatural.

Example

  • Salt and vinegar goes well with French fries.

  • Red wine goes well with steak.

  • It can also be used in the negative.

  • Chocolate sauce doesn’t go well with cheeseburgers.

Hello there everyone, 

Since we will be talking about expressing opinion and agreeing/disagreeing this weekend here is a phrase that we use to express agreement.

“see eye to eye”

This can be used in the positive or the negative to express either agreement or disagreement.

Example

I don’t know how my parents get along so well since they never seem to see eye to eye on anything!

The owners of the company are two very different people but when it comes to business they see eye to eye on almost everything.

Hello everyone,

Today I’d like to focus on a small mistake my students sometimes make.

As you all know “cook” can be used as a verb

Ex. What kind of food do you cook?

But it can also be used as a noun

Ex. My husband is a cook.

And be careful in the above situation not to use the words “cooker” and “cock”

Cock is slang for male anatomy, or means a male chicken alternatively.

Cooker is a machine as in “We bought a really cool rice cooker!”

So, are you a good cook?

What kind of food do you like to cook?

Hello everyone!

We have some exciting news, thanks to the hard work of our teachers and staff, our kids school in Sakurazaka has had a tremendous first year filled with laughter, happiness, parent satisfaction and loads of English improvement by our younger learners.

Now it’s time to follow on that successful story and open up our second English school for kids in March. It’s going to be located in Yakuin next to our adult school.

The opening date is going to be March 4th and the teacher is going to be Liam from England. Liam has a lot of experience teaching children classes and we are very excited to welcome him to our team. This is going to be an undeniably very busy couple of months for Kensington but we are very excited and ready for the challenge!!

The Yakuin Kensington Kids Academy is going to be open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for kindergarten classes and on Wednesday and Friday for elementary classes. Please take note that the elementary classes are not going to start until we have at least 2 students in each class.

みなさんこんにちは！

Hello there everyone, since we are on the subject of Valentine’s day this weekend let’s talk a bit about chocolate. 

First of all, pronunciation….

My students tend to pronounce the word more like it is pronounced in Japanese

cho-co-lai-to

But chocolate is pronounced as a two syllable word we don’t pronounce the middle co and the end is not pronounced strongly so it looks like this,

choclit

Same with cocoa in English it’s pronounced 

coco

Also a lot of people tell me they are giving their boss raw chocolate but it should actually be fresh chocolate.

私の生徒さん方で日本語で言うようにその単語を発音する傾向があります。

ですが、チョコレートは２つの音節で発音され、真ん中のcoは発音せず、最後もそんなに強く発しません。なのでこのようになります、

ココアの英語も同様に発音されます。

coco

また、多くの人がボスに生チョコ / raw chocolateを渡したと教えてくれますが、正しくは生チョコ / fresh chocolate となります。
