Since the topic for this weekend’s classes is homestay, I thought I’d show you this idiom connected to houses. 

“Get on like a house on fire” 

It’s a bit of a strange idiom because the phrase itself sounds rather negative but it actually means to have a very good relationship with someone or to become friends with someone soon after meeting them. 

Examples

David has four siblings but he is closest to his cousin Andy. Those two get on like a house on fire. 

I was worried about introducing Charles to my father for the first time but it was okay. They are both Man Utd. Fans so they got on like a house on fire.

この表現は少し変わっていますね。一見ネガティブそうな表現なのですが、実は誰かと良い関係を持つことや、誰かと会ってすぐに友達になる、という意味があるのです。

例

Hope you all enjoyed the summer holidays and are feeling refreshed and ready to get back into your English studies!

The topic for this weekend’s classes in Akasaka, Nishijin, and Yakuin is “Homestay”

We will be talking about the benefits of doing a homestay andthe places you’d like to visit or your experiences on a homestay overseas. We will also be doing a bit of role playing with you meeting your host family for the first time, talking about yourself and your town, and asking permission to use things around the house. 

Sounds pretty informative to me!

Today I’d like to introduce you to a very useful expression when talking about food. It’s “a local delicacy” and we use it when we talk about foods that are very famous in a particular place (and delicious!).

For example :

Mentaiko is a local delicacy in Fukuoka!

You should definitely try ramen, it’s a local delicacy!

日常英会話レッスン - 「塾」は英語で何と訳せばいい？

Hello everyone,

Since our subject for this week is education, do you know how to say Juku in English? We say cram schools and it’s something that is not so popular in my country, Greece. I know that in Japan many children go to cram school from a very young age, whereas in my country (Greece) students usually only go to language schools when they are very young.

An interesting piece of information is that I only went to cram school during the summer of 1993 (between my 2nd and 3rd grade of high school) cause I had failed two subjects. The subjects I had failed were Math and Cosmography.

I was terrible at Cosmography and I deserved to fail it and I also wasn’t all that good in math but I think I didn’t deserve to fail math. I studied very hard for my final test and I did very well but I still believe my math teacher graded me very unfairly. I remember he once came to our class drunk! He wasn’t a very good teacher I think.

皆さんこんにちは。

今週のレッスントピックは「教育」ですから、ここで質問です。英語で「塾」を何というかご存知でしょうか。それは “cram school”「詰め込み学校」というのですが、私の国ギリシャではそれほどみんなに広がっているものというわけではありません。日本では多くの子どもたちがとても幼いうちから塾に通っていることは知っていますが、私の国（ギリシャ）では生徒たちはごく小さいうちはふつう外国語スクールに通うくらいです。

ちょっとおかしな話なのですが、私は1993年の夏（高校の2－3年にかけてです）に一度だけ塾に通ったことがあります。2教科の単位を落としたからです。不合格だった教科とは、数学と宇宙構造論でした。

宇宙構造論はまったく苦手で不合格も当然のことでした。数学もそんなに良くはなかったのですが、数学で不合格をもらうほど悪かったとは思えません。最終試験に向けてとても一生懸命勉強して結局、非常によい成績を収めたのですが、実は私の数学の先生は不公平な評価をしたのではないかといまだに思っています。一度など、この先生は授業に酔っぱらって来たことがあるんですよ！あまり良い教師ではなかったな、と思います。

Here is a useful little expression that can be used in everyday life and not just the business world.

“stay on top of~”

This means to keep up your work on something and not fall behind.

Example

“We really have to stay on top of the accounts for every month. If we don’t , it’ll pile up and up and become impossible to deal with at the end of the year.”

食べ物について話そう！ - 濃い？薄い？味わいの強弱を表す英語にはこれをどうぞ。

These two are things that my students seem to have a little trouble with when describing how something tastes.  We use strong/ light flavour to describe the level of taste in something.

Examples

Miso soup is a traditional Japanese dish eaten with any meal. It usually consists of tofu and vegetables and has a light flavour. 

Haggis is a traditional Scottish dish made from sheep’s innards and seasoning. It has a very distinct, strong flavour and is not to everyone’s liking.

While I’ve been teaching the “At the doctor’s” lessons this month I’ve noticed a mistake that a lot of people seem to make. In Japanese you use の when you are giving dates for example 25日の朝. Most of my students have been directly translating this as the 25th’s morning which is understandable but a little uncomfortable to a native speaker’s ear.  

Correct Version

on the morning of the 25th/ in the morning on the 25th

In context

“I’d like to make an appointment for the morning of the 25th.”

Other Mistakes

today’s morning/ yesterday’s night  X

Correct Version

this morning/ last night  O

みなさんこんにちは。

今月、「病院で」というトピックでレッスンをしているときに、ある間違いをたくさんの人がしているのに気づきました。日本語では「の」を日付を言うときに使いますよね。例えば「25日の朝」みたいに。ですから、私の生徒さんたちのほとんどがこれを直訳して “the 25th’s morning” と言っていたのはよく分かる気がしますが、英語ネイティブの耳にはすこし聞きづらい感じがします。

【正しい言い方】

on the morning of the 25th/ in the morning on the 25th「25日の朝に」

【文での使い方】

“I’d like to make an appointment for the morning of the 25th.”「25日の朝に予約をしたいのですが。」

【その他の例】

誤：　today’s morning「今日の朝、今朝」/ yesterday’s night「昨日の夜、昨夜」

正：　this morning「今日の朝、今朝」/ last night  O「昨日の夜、昨夜」

Hello everyone,

Do you work in the service industry? Are you also a beginner in English? Well in that case in addition to learning how to say “hello” with a big smile to your foreign customers you should also probably learn how to use “would you like”.

For example if you work at a restaurant (Which was our subject this weekend) see how many things you could say with only using “would you like”.

  • Where would you like to sit?

  • Would you like me to take your jacket?

  • Would you like something to drink?

  • Would you like to order?

  • Would you like to see the wine menu?

  • Would you like anything else? 

  • How would you like it cooked?

  • How would you like it served?

  • Would you like to have dessert?

  • Would you like to have the bill?

  • How would you like to pay?

  • Would you like me to call you a taxi?

  • etc…..

“Would you like” is a magical expression that makes dealing with foreign customers so much easier, so it’s a good idea to learn how to use it well. If you need more help, why don’t you arrange a private lesson with one of our great teachers in Kensington!!

みなさんこんにちは。

サービス業界で働いていらっしゃ いますか。そして英語は初心者でいらっしゃる？だとしたら、まず外国からのお客様に大きな笑顔とともに “Hello!” という言い方を覚えた後、次にお勧めしたいのは “would you like” （ご希望されますか）の使い方です。

例えばレストランにお勤めだとすると（これは今週のレッスントピックでもあります）、 “would you like” を使うだけでこんなにたくさんのことを話せるんですよ。

【例】どこにおかけになりますか。（どこに座るのを希望されますか。）

【例】ジャケットをお預かりしましょうか。（ジャケットをお預かりすることを希望されますか。）

【例】お飲み物はいかがでしょうか。（＝何か飲むものを希望されますか）

【例】ご注文なさいますか。（＝ご注文を希望されますか）

【例】ワインのメニューはいかがでしょうか。（＝ワインメニューを希望されますか）

【例】他にご希望はございますか。（＝何か他のものも希望されますか）

【例】調理はどのようにいたしましょうか。（＝どのように調理するのを希望されますか）

【例】どのようにお出しいたしましょうか。（＝どのようにお出しするのを希望されますか）

【例】デザートはいかがでしょうか。（＝デザートを希望されますか）

【例】お会計をお持ちしましょうか。（＝お会計を希望されますか）

【例】お支払いはいかがいたしましょうか。（＝お支払いはどのように希望されますか）

【例】タクシーをお呼びいたしましょうか。（＝タクシーをよぶよう希望されますか）

などなど。

For today I’d like to share an interesting talk on TED about language and how it shapes how we think. Do you guys think differently in English and in Japanese? I think I do, I’m much less direct in Japanese I think using そうですね as a way to politely disagree with someone but I’m less likely to do the same when speaking English. I’d probably be more direct (but still polite!)

今日は、言語がどのように私たちの思考方法を形作るのかについてTEDからの興味深い話しをお伝えしますね。みなさんは英語の時と日本語の時とで異なる考え方をしますか。自分はそうだなと思います。日本語のときはかなり直接的ではなくなり、誰かの意見に反対する際に「そうですね」という言葉を失礼にならないように使っていますが、英語で話しているときは、同じようなリアクションをすることはあまりないと思います。おそらくもっと直接的だと思います（といっても、礼儀は忘れませんが！）。
