Travel English-making an invitation

Hello everyone. One of the big differences between Japanese and western culture is that in the west we tend to spend a lot of time at our friends’ homes, we often have house parties (sometimes completely unplanned) so it isn’t unusual to be invited to or invite people to your home. Here are some phrase I hope you find useful if you ever find yourself in that situation.

  • a dinner party　夕食会、晩餐会
  • a barbecue　バーベキュー
  • a housewarming　新築祝い、引っ越し祝い
  • a birthday party　誕生日パーティー
  • watch the footballサッカーの決勝戦を見る

Hello everyone, today is Monday and that can only mean one thing!! Our weekly amazing Business English blog!! Today’s expression is “sell at a loss”. Not a very good experience but probably necessary sometimes. 

sell (something) at a loss: to sell something at a price below cost
出血価格で売る: 原価より安い価格で売ること

Amazon is known to sell its hardware at a small loss.
アマゾンは、ハードウェアを、原価より少し安くして販売することで知られている。

日常英会話レッスン – a few cans short of a six pack

Hello again.

 I’m going to show you one of my favourite expressions today, I’d love to hear one of you using at the school in the future.

“ a few cans short of a six pack”

This is a wonderful expression and it means that someone is quite eccentric or a bit crazy.

I have the perfect candidate in mind as an example for this sentence but I won’t name any names, all I can say is he is an English teacher in Fukuoka and he runs his own schools in Yakuin and Akasaka.

“Have you met Hiromi’s husband?”
 
“No, why?”
 
“He’s a nice guy, quite funny, but I think he’s a few cans short of a six pack!”

This expression can also be replaced with this phrase..

a few sandwiches short of a picnic

Don’t be shy to give it a go, we really do use this in everyday conversation.

今日は皆さまに私の好きな表現を紹介したいと思います。皆さんが今後この言葉を学校で使っているところを聞いてみたいです。

“ a few cans short of a six pack”
“ちょっと頭が足りない” “”おバカさん”

この表現はとても素晴らしく、ちょっと変わっている人やcrazyという意味です。

下記の例文はある人を思い浮かべて作りましたが、名前は言えません。ただ言えることは、福岡で英語の先生をしていて、薬院と赤坂で英会話学校を運営している人です。

“Have you met Hiromi’s husband?”
「ひろみの旦那さんに会ったことある？」
 
“No, why?”
「ないよ。なんで？」
 
“He’s a nice guy, quite funny, but I think he’s a few cans short of a six pack!”
「彼ってステキで面白い人だけど、ちょっと変わり者なの！」

またこんな感じでも置き換えることができます。

毎日の会話でよく使うので、恥ずかしがらず使ってくださいね。

Travel English – Summer holidays

Hello everyone, are you enjoying the summer? I had two days off last week and spent two days at the pool in Uminonakamichi. Here are two photos of me and my very cute son and me and a very cute penguin!

We have finally decided our summer holiday plans for this year and we’ll be going to Goto island in Nagasaki this weekend. We are going to go camping, have barbeques (every day like Dr.Dre!), do kayak, swim and basically relax from the hectic (but very enjoyable) life of running Kensington Eikaiwa!

I’m looking forward to seeing you all in class next week!

Hello everyone, I'm going to be posting some very usual animal idioms from now on every second Friday. Today is one that we can hear very very usually in Hollywood movies, especially movies related to crime, gangs or prison.
 
rat on someone: to report someone's bad behaviour to someone in authority; to tattle on someone.
Ex: His accomplice ratted on him to save his skin.

Today's business English expression is "out of stock" and it simply means that something is not available for purchase at a store or online at that time. I have been trying to buy the Nintendo Switch for my daughter for 2 months but it has always been out of stock unfortunately.

The new tablets were so popular that they run out of stock in just a few days.

Hi everyone, today I will show you the different ways we use the word bloody in British English.

First of all, bloody can be used in positive or negative sentences to show a level of extremity, or simply to show frustration.

First,I’ll show you  the positive.

“I went to see the new Star Wars film the other day, it was bloody good.”

“I really like the new Manchester United forward, he’s a bloody good player.”

Next I’ll show you the negative.

“I’m not going to that restaurant again, it’s way too bloody expensive.”

“It’s too bloody hot to do anything today, I’m not going out.”

Finally, we use it combined with hell to to show frustration.

For example, say you have just bought a new shirt but you accidentally spill red wine on it, the appropriate thing to say would be…

“Bloody hell!”

始めにいい意味で使うとこうなります。

最後にhellと組み合わせて使うこともできます。

例えば、新しいシャツを買ったばかりで、赤ワインをこぼした時にこう言います。。。

It’s finally summer and one of the best things about summer is that we can get long holidays. I still haven’t decided where we’ll travel this summer. One of the nicest places I have travelled to in Japan is Yakushima. We stayed at a very nice Ryokan with lovely food, rent a car and drove around the island, went to the beach, went trekking and were also attacked by monkeys!!
