Hello everyone, hope you all had a great weekend. Looks like the hot weather is going to stay with us for a little bit longer still.

Today’s business English expression is “ have a lot on one’s plate” , which means to be very busy or to have a lot of duties or responsibilities.

Here are some examples.

It’s been really hectic around here recently, we’ve had a lot on our plate what with the opening of the Ropponmatsu school.

“Why don’t you give the new project to John.?”

“No, I don’t think so, he has enough on his plate with the staff training.”

日常英会語レッスン - Hit vs Attack

Hello everyone, summer is almost at an end and with that next comes typhoon season!

There is one mistake that all my students seem to make every year around this time and that it is when they are talking about typhoons.

Everyone seems to say this..

A large typhoon attacked Kagoshima last night.   X

I know why you are saying this, but remember direct translations don’t always work. In this case, attack means to hit something or someone with intention, but since typhoons don’t have brains, and as far as I know they hold no grudge against Japan, then this is unfortunately, not possible.

If you want to use attack then it can be used in a sentence like this…

The World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists in 2001.

In this case it was intentional.

When we talk about natural disasters it is better to use the word hit.

Kagoshima was hit by a large typhoon last night.

Fukuoka City was hit by a magnitude 6 earthquake in 2005.

Fukuoka and Oita were hit with heavy flooding earlier this summer.

毎年この時期に台風の話しをしている時に生徒さんみんなが間違っている一つのことがあります。

みなさんこう言っています。

A large typhoon attacked Kagoshima last night.   X

なぜこう言ってるか分かりますが、直訳はいつもうまくいっていないと覚えてください。この場合attackは、意図して何か物や人をヒットするということを意味していますが、台風は脳みそがあるわけではありませんし、私が知る限り日本に恨みがあるわけではありません。不運で防げないことです。

もしattackを使いたいときはこのような文章になります。

The World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists in 2001.
ワールドトレードセンターは2001年にテロリストによって攻撃されました。

この場合、意図的に起きてることですよね。私たちが自然災害のことについて話すときは、hitを使う方がいいです。

Kagoshima was hit by a large typhoon last night.
鹿児島は去年大きな台風の被害に遭いました。

Fukuoka City was hit by a magnitude 6 earthquake in 2005.
福岡市は2005年マグニチュード6の地震にみまわれました。

Fukuoka and Oita were hit with heavy flooding earlier this summer.
福岡と大分は今年の夏の始め、大変な洪水被害に遭いました。

Travel English – Changing money

Hi everybody, for any of you thinking of travelling to the U.K I’d like to show you a how to talk about money.

Firstly when you arrive in the U.K you will need to change your yen into pounds so you can say..

“I’d like to change some yen to pounds please.”

If you want to know how much you should receive then you can ask..

“What’s the exchange rate for yen to pounds please?”

Secondly,  the currency of the U.K is the pound.  There are 100 pennies in a pound so if you are at the counter paying for something the staff will ask you for it like this…

“That’s thirteen pounds forty five please.”

We call them notes, not bills like in the U.S, and they come in fives, tens, twenties, and fifties.

We have a lot of slang words for money in the U.K but the most common one is quid. For example if you don’t have much money with you you can say..

“ I have to go to the ATM, I only have a few quid on me”

Five and ten pound notes are often called fivers and tenners. Lot’s of small corner shops don’t like big notes when you are paying for something small so if that’s all you have you can say..

“Have you got change for a fifty?”

Finally,  when you are in the U.K you’ll notice that all the notes are different when moving from country to country, basically you can use the different notes in any country in the U.K but lots of shops won’t take them so it’s best to go to the bank and change them into notes of the country you want to go to first.

みなさんこんにちは！UKへの旅行を考えている人の為にお金のことについてお話ししたいです。まず初めに、UKに着いたら円をポンドに替えないといけません。そこでこう言いましょう。

「円をポンドに替えたいのですが。」

そしてレートを聞きたいときはこう言いましょう。

「円からポンドのレートはいくらですか？」

次に、UKの通貨はポンドです。100ペニーは1ポンドですので何か支払いをするとき、スタッフはこのように言います。

「13.45ポンドです。」

私たちは紙幣のことをアメリカのようにBillsとは言わずnotesと言います。紙幣は、5,10,20,50ポンド札があります。UKではお金に関してたくさんのスラングがありますが、最も一般的なのはquidです。

例えばあまりお金を持っていなかったら、

「ATMに行かなきゃ。お金が少ししかないよ。」

5ポンド札や10ポンド札のことはfivers や tennersと呼ばれています。小さなお店の多くは、ちょっとしたものを大きな単位の紙幣で払われることをあまり好まないので、こう言ってみてください。

「50ポンド札で払ってお釣りはありますか？」

最後に、UKでいろんな国を回ると、紙幣が全て違うことに気づくでしょう。基本的には別の紙幣でもUKでは使えますが、受け取ってくれないお店もあるので、まず行きたい国の通貨に銀行で両替しておくのが一番いいでしょう。

Hello everyone, the weekend is finally here! I hope you all have something fun planned this weekend, I will be going to my son’s school sports day which apparently begins at 8:30 in the morning. Meaning I will probably be knackered afterwards.

Today’s British slang term is knackered, which simply means very tired.

For example.

I was completely knackered at the end of the Marathon.

When I arrived in the U.K I was completely knackered after having travelled for 20 hours!

Today’s idiom is “a cash cow” and we use it both in business English and everyday English. It means something that makes a lot of money. Jaimie and I are hoping that our Ropponmatsu school proves to be a cash cow but even if it doesn’t it’s OK since we love meeting and teaching you guys so much we would do it for (almost!) free.

a cash cow: a business or a part of a business that always makes a lot of profit.
Ex: It is the financial services that are the company’s biggest cash cow.
金のなる「牛」：常に利益を出す事業やその一部。
例：その会社の最大のドル箱は金融サービスだ。

今日のイディオムは、“a cash cow” です。
ビジネス英会話でも日常英会話でも使います。
“a cash cow”とは、儲かること、利益を出すことを意味します。
ジェイミーも私も六本木校で利益を出すことを望んでますが、生徒のみなさんに会って、英会話を教えれることが大好きなので、そうじゃなくても大丈夫です。

Hi everyone, I don’t know if any of you are planning a trip to the U.K in the near future or not, but I am, and so should you be!

I’m not going till next year though so over that time I will be giving you advice on places to go and see and some of the best things about the U.K.

Today I want to give you 2 pieces of advice.

Number 1: Get out of London.

Too many of my students go to the U.K and only stay in the capital, of course there is plenty to do and see there but it is super expensive, I will show you a few of the nicer places to visit in later blogs. One of the good things about the U.K is that state run museums are FREE and there are plenty of those in London, but if money is a concern London is not the place to be.

Number 2: Eat as much Indian food as possible!

The U.K has a reputation of having nothing but bad food but believe me you can’t find a finer curry anywhere else, there is a huge Indian and Pakistani community in Britain and they are amazing. Indian restaurants in Japan all have similar menus, but the variety in Britain is huge so if you are going there, hitting the curry house is a must.

Those are 2 good  ones to start off with, more coming the week after next.

今日は二つのアドバイスをします。

Number one：ロンドンから出よう

多くの生徒さんたちはUKに行ったら首都だけに滞在します。もちろんすることや見るものはたくさんありますが、ものすごく物価が高いです。後のブログでいくつかもっといい場所を見せます。UKでのいいことの一つに、州が運営している無料の美術館がたくさんあります。ロンドンにもいくつもありますが、お金の心配があるのであればロンドンは向いていません。

Number two：できるだけ沢山インド料理を食べよう

UKは食べ物が美味しくないと言われていますが、こんな素晴らしいカレーは他では見つからないです、信じてください。イギリスにはインド人やパキスタン人のとっても大きなコミュニティーがあり、彼らは素晴らしいです。日本のインド料理屋さんは似たようなメニューばかりですが、イギリスではとっても種類が多いです。もしイギリスに行くときは必ずカレー屋さんに行ってみてください。

Hi everyone, we would like to let you know that we are partnering up with Tonerico Cafe to offer you a bi monthly chance to use all the English you have been working at so hard at in a more casual  situation.  The events will be held every 2 months with the first one being held on the 14th of October from 18:00~20:00.

The entrance fee is 1000 yen, which includes one drink, and all drinks and food are priced from 500 yen pay as you go after that. We are making this an all English event so it will be a great chance to test your skills in a more real setting than in the classroom, Tim, Jaimie, and the other staff and teachers will be there to help you out but first and foremost we are there to enjoy some drinks, food and have a laugh while we are at it!

Hello again. Today I’m going to show you this British expression.

Fancy.

Fancy has 2 different meanings.

1. To like the look of something, usually food or drink.

  • “Have you ever tried sushi?”
  • “No, I’ve never really fancied it.”
  • “Does anyone fancy a cup of tea?”
  • “ Lovely, I’ll have one thanks.”

     2.  To be attracted to someone else.

  • I think Tom really fancies Laura, every time he speaks to her his face goes bright red!
