Hi there, today is Friday so it’s time for this week’s beautiful British English expression!

Today we will be looking at the phrase “cock up”

To cock something up means to do a very bad job at something or to fail at something.

For example.
I cocked up my scheduling last week and booked 2 students at the same time in different schools ( this is just an example of course because I never cock up!)
 
“What’s the matter?”
 
“Look at my hair! The barber really cocked it up this time!”
 
I cocked up on my exams and had to sit 5 of them again the following month.
 
That’s how it is used, it’s a pretty simple and very common expression so go ahead and give it a try !

Hello everyone, today(Thursday) was my daughter’s first day back at school so it’s officially the end of the summer holidays for my family. I was so happy to have my daughter at home every day all day and to be able to spend a lot of nice times with her!

This summer we travelled to Goto in Nagasaki and some of the things we did were
we went camping,
we had a barbeque, 
we did kayak,
we went driving,
we ate local food, 
we went to the beach,
we stayed at a nice hotel,
we went to the pool,
we did sailing,
we made new friends (some really friendly people from Korea!)
and generally had a really really nice time!

Today I’d like to introduce you an expression that we use a lot in English (especially in the world of gyms and training) and is possibly hard to understand. It’s gym rat, and it means someone that works really hard at the gym! Do you know any gym rats?

gym rat:  a person who spends a lot of time at the gym.
Ex: Johnny never leaves the gym. He’s such a gym rat!

Travel English – Survival techniques in the pub!

 Hello everyone, I’m not sure if you know this or not but I quite like beer. Before I came to Japan I used to spend a bit of time in the pub in the U.K and it’s a bit different from here in Japan so let me show you some of what you need to know if you are lucky enough to find yourself in a British pub.

First of all, pubs in the U.K are all cash on delivery so you pay each time you go to the bar, if you are in a group you tend to do rounds which means that you take turns buying drinks for the group.

Secondly, all drinks are measured so if you want to buy a drink they come like this.

Beer: a pint (　just over 500ml)

        a half pint ( just over 250ml)

        a bottle (same as in Japan)

Wine: a glass

spirits: a single/ a double (25ml/ 50 ml) if you are friendly with the bar staff they may give you a triple but most won’t. They can be served straight, with ice, with water, with a chaser

So, a typical conversation would go like this.

Tim: “ Whose round is it?”

Jaimie “ Yours!”

Tim: “ Okay, what is everyone having?”

Jaimie: “ A pint of lager.”

Aya: “ A bottle of Smirnoff Ice”

Rina: “ A double highball.”

And that’s it, Tim will very kindly buy us all a round.

Bar Staff: “ What can I get you?”

Tim: “I’ll have a pint of lager, a Smirnoff Ice, …….

If you are friendly with the staff, you may also tip them, the best way to that is to pay slighty over what you’ve been charged and just tell them..]

“Keep the change.”

みなさんこんにちは、みなさんがこれを知ってるかどうか分かりませんが、、私はビールが大好きです。 日本に来る前、イギリスのパブによく行っていました。日本のパブとはちょっと違いますので、もし運よくブリティッシュパブを見つけた時に知っておいた方がいいことを書かせてください。

まず第一に、イギリスのパブは全て現金払いで自分でドリンクを運びますので毎回バーのところに行ってお金を払います。もしあなたがグループで行っていたら、みんな順番に仲間にドリンクをおごる傾向があります。

ふたつ目に、全てのドリンクは量が計られています。もし買いたい時はこのような感じになっています。

ビール: a pint (500ml)

        a half pint (250ml)

        a bottle (日本と同じ)

ワイン: グラス1杯

スピリット: a single/ a double (25ml/ 50 ml)      もしバーのスタッフと仲が良かったら、トリプルも出してくれるかもしれませんが、ほとんどのバーはないです。ストレート、ロック、水割り、もしくはチェイサーと一緒に出してくれます。

典型的な会話はこんな感じになるでしょう。

Tim: “次誰の番？”

Jaimie “君だよ！”

Tim: “ オッケー、みんな何飲む?”

Jaimie: “ 俺は500mlのラガー.”

Aya: “ 私はスミノフのボトル”

Rina: “ 私はダブルハイボール”

、、そしてTimは親切にみんなにドリンクを買ってくれます。

バーのスタッフ: “ 何にしますか?”

Tim: “500mlのラガーとスミノフと …….をください”

そしてもしスタッフと友達だったら、チップをあげましょう。一番いい方法はお会計より少し多く払って、こう言うんです。

“お釣りは取っておいて。”

日常英会語レッスン - どれくらいやっていますか？

Hello again, today I’m not going to be giving you advice on how to study, I’m just going to show you a simple piece of grammar that everyone seems to have real difficulty getting into their heads even though it is really quite simple.

When we talk about how often we do something, if the time phrase is in the singular we use a/ an before the time phrase.

Example

  • “How often do you go to the gym?”
  • “I go once a week.”
  • The timer goes off twice an hour to remind you to take the bread out of the oven.

As you can see in the examples above, we have used the time words week and hour in the singular so the prepositions are a/ an.

On the other hand if the time phrase is in the plural you replace a/an with every.

Example.

  • “ How often do you go to the gym?”
  • “ I go once every two weeks”

The timer goes off once every 2 hours to remind you to change the temperature.

And there you have it. It’s really so easy but I often hear my students commenting on how difficult this is.

So remember 

  • Singular  a/ an
  • Plural   every

みなさんこんにちは！今日は勉強法についてのアドバイスではなく、たとえ本当にシンプルなことでもみなさんが難しく感じていそうな文法を見せたいと思います。

どれくらいの頻度でやっているか？という話しをする時には、
時を表すものが1であれば、数字の前にaかanを使います。

例えば、
“ How often do you go to the gym?”
“I go once a week.”

タイマーはパンをオーブンから出すのを思い出させるために1時間に2回鳴ります。

この例えのように期間を表す時はweekやhour(1週間に○○、1時間に○○)を使うのでその前はaやanになります。

一方で期間が複数(2週間に○○など)になると、aやanの代わりにeveryを使います。

例えば
“ How often do you go to the gym?”
“ I go once every two weeks”

タイマーは部屋の温度を変えることを思い出させるために、2時間に1回鳴ります。

どうですか、とっても簡単ですよね？でも生徒さんからは難しいとよく聞きます。

これを覚えてください。

単数の時は a/an
複数の時はevery
