Today's expression is very useful for anyone ever having to use English on the phone. It's to "put someone on hold".

put (someone) on hold
（人）の電話を保留する
to temporarily disconnect someone from the telephone
電話通話を一時的に中断すること

I phoned the bank but I was put on hold for 15 minutes before I could ever talk to anyone.
銀行に電話しましたが、誰にも取り次いでもらえずに、15分も待たされました。

We have many animal idioms in the English language, some of which very commonly used. I’m going to start introducing you some very common ones related to monkeys.

I have never seen a monkey in Fukuoka. I’ve seen some wild ones in Oita and Kagoshima and sometimes I see a weazel at my classroom in Yakuin.

Some people love them, some people hate them. Personally, I find them rather cool in a way. My two kids sometimes behave like monkeys sometimes, hence the expression monkeying around.

Monkey around (play around, not do something seriously)
「猿」し回る (ブラブラする、物事を軽く扱う)
Stop monkeying around! I want to get this finished and go home.

私は福岡では猿を見たことはありませんが、大分や鹿児島では野生の猿を見たことがあります。それと、たまに薬院でも教室でイタチを見たりします。

猿を好きな人もいれば、嫌いな人もいます。個人的には、猿はかっこいいと思います。私の2人の子供たちはたまに猿のようになったりするので、ここで、monkeying aroundの表現の仕方を紹介します。

ケンジントン英会話ニュース - 赤坂のとねりこカフェの英会話カフェパーティー

Last Sunday we held an English party at Tonerico cafe in Akasaka. It was the first time we held the party entirely in English and I think it went very well. We are going to hold this party every two months (next is in December) and we hope to improve upon our first effort so any feedback from our students would be very welcome.

I’d like to thank all of you for coming and I’d like to say how thankful and proud Jaimie and I feel about the way every student at the party tried his and her best to be friendly and speak English for two hours regardless of level.

Jaimie and I were planning to go around and assist students when there was English trouble but you were so great at it that it was almost entirely unnecessary. A school can only be as great as its students are, and in you guys I feel we have the best students in the world!!

先週の土曜日に赤坂のとねりこカフェさんで英会話パーティーをしました。英語オンリーのパーティーは初めてでしたが、とてもよかったと思います。英語オンリーのパーティーは一月毎にします。（次は12月です。）この取組を改善していって、生徒みなさんのお役に立てればいいなと思っています。

パーティーに参加していただいたみなさんに感謝の気持ちと、ジェイミー先生への感謝のきもち、彼のことをとても誇りに思っています。レベルに関係なく、この2時間、生徒みなさんがフレンドリーに英語を話すことにベストを尽くしていたと思います。

英語に困った時のために私とジェイミーは周って、みなさんをサポートしようと思ってましたが、みなさんはとてもよくできていて、その必要はなかったみたいです。素晴らしい生徒さん達がいるから学校も素晴らしくなるのです。私たちはみなさんが世界中で1番ベストな生徒だと思っています。

I like this expression. It reminds me a of very cool GZA song called "liquid swords".  It means assets can be easily liquidated i.e. converted to cash.

liquid assets
流動資産
property or belongings that can easily be converted into cash
換金性の高い資産や所有物

Cash is the most liquid asset of all as it can be “sold” for goods and services instantly with no loss of value.
現金は全ての中で最も流動性の高い資産であり、価値を損ねることなく、即座に商品及びサービスの対価として「売る」ことができる。

Hi there everyone. In today’s travel English we will introduce you to the names of some of the different sections of a supermarket and show you how to ask for things you can’t find. I remember being completely lost trying to do this when I first came here so hopefully this will help you out.

First, the different aisles.

  • dairy
  • canned goods
  • chilled goods
  • frozen foods
  • toiletries
  • household goods
  • fruit and veg
  • the deli counter
  • the fish counter
  • dried foods
  • alcohol

That’s it for the aisles. Next when you want to ask for something remember to use the , we always use the when we are talking about a specific thing or things.

For example…

  • “Excuse me where will I find the milk?”
  • “It’s in the dairy aisle over here.”
  • “Excuse me, where will I find the oranges?”
  • “They are in the fruit and veg section over there”

Hello again, it’s time for your weekly dose of lovely British English, so here we go.

Today I will show you this phrase “ Give us a bell”

This simply means “ Please call me” and there are plenty of other versions, in my hometown most people say give us a shout or give us a buzz.
Here is an example.

“I’d better get home, it’s getting late.”

“Okay, give us a bell to let me know you got back alright.” 

And that’s it, easy as can be.

Travel English-catching the bus

Hello everyone, today I would like to show you a few useful expressions for riding the bus( a harrowing experience sometime) Hopefully these will make your life a little easier.

Firstly there are a number of ways to ask about where you need to go. If you want ask the driver directly then you can ask like this.

  • “Excuse me does this bus go to the library?”
  • “Excuse does this bus stop at the library?” 

If you need to ask at the bus station you can ask like this.

  • “Which buses can I take for the library?”
  • “Which buses stop at the library?”


If you are unsure of when your stop is or are worried about being able to hear the bus announcements then you can always ask the driver to inform you when you have reached your  destination.

  • “Could you let me know when we get there please?”

If you want to ask about times at the bus station you do it like this.

  • “What time is the next bus to the airport please?
  • “What time is the first/ last train to the airport please?

That should probably be enough to get you where you want to go, hope it comes in useful one day.

最初に、あなたが行かなければいけない場所のたずね方がいくつかあります。

  • 「すみません、このバスは図書館に行きますか？」
  • 「すみません、このバスは図書館で停まりますか？」

もし、バス停で尋ねる時は、このように尋ねることもできます。

  • 「どのバスが図書館に行きますか？」
  • 「どのバスが図書館で停まりますか？」

もし降りるバス停がわからない時、もしくはバスのアナウンスが聴き取れないと不安な時は、到着した時に運転手さんに知らせてもらうこともできます。

  • 「そのバス停に着いた時に知らせてもらえませんか？」

もし、バス停でバスの時刻を聞きたい時は、次のように聞いてください。

  • 「空港行きの次のバスは何時ですか？」
  • 「空港までの始発/最終の電車は何時ですか？」

行きたいところにたどり着くにはこれで充分でしょう。

Travel English -  Going Camping

Last weekend my family and I went to Oita for two days. On Saturday we went to a camping site near Nakatsu city and on Sunday we stayed at a ryokan near there. Some of the things we did were:

go driving
go camping
stay at a lodge
make a fire
swing on the swing
play at a treehouse
have a barbeque
light fireworks
play sports
stay at a ryokan
go to hot springs
take a walk in the forest
feed a bird

 

We had a lovely time in Oita and hopefully will be able to go there again!

Today’s idiom is a little bit funny I think. It’s “until the cows come home” and it means for a very long time. Apparently cows take a very long time to return home, though I wouldn’t know for sure as I have never really had a cow!

until the cows come home: for a very long time.
Ex: We could talk about this problem until the cows come home, but it wouldn't solve anything.
牛が牛舎に帰るまで：とても長い間。
例：この問題について長々と話すこともできるだろうけど、何の解決にもならないだろうね。

Hello everyone,

As you may know we are holding a cafe class and a party at Tonerico cafe on Oct 14th from 17:00 - 20:00.

This time our party will be very different from our previous parties. Oct 14th is going to be Kensington’s first English party. Jaimie and I have decided to change the format of the party so we can give all of you the opportunity to practice your hard-learned English in a different environment.

For any of you that worry about whether you can speak English for two hours, please don’t. We’ll have activities and a structure to make sure that you can speak English comfortably and enjoy the party and also Jaimie, I and other teachers are also going to be there to help you!

We are really really excited about the party and are looking forward to seeing all of you there!
