Hello everyone,

I think that probably the most useful grammar anyone can know for when travelling is how to use “Can I have……., please?”. We usually ask for things when we travel and “Can I have…….,please?” is a very easy way to ask for things in English.

Examples:
At the airport: Can I have an aisle seat, please?
At the shop: Can I have this, please?
At a bar: Can I have a pint of beer, please?
At the hotel: Can I have an extra towel, please?
At the restaurant: Can I have the today’s special, please?

Good morning everyone,

Today I’ll introduce you a health related idiom, that we hear sometimes in movies or use in everyday life. It’s “have one foot in the grave” and it means to be very near death.

Have one foot in the grave
- to be near death (usually because of old age or illness)
My poor old dog has one foot in the grave unfortunately.
片足が棺桶に入っている
- 死にかけている (通例、老齢や病気のため)
かわいそうな私のおじいちゃん犬、残念だけど、具合が悪くて今にも死にそうなの。

Today’s business expression is “shoot down” , which means to reject an idea or proposal.

For example…

Hello again, as you all know (or maybe don’t) both Tim and I will be out of Fukuoka in August, which means that we will be having our summer party a little earlier than usual this year.

英語の勉強法ー形容詞、名詞、副詞を学ぼう

Hi there everyone, in my last blog I recommended that you should learn all the verb tenses off by heart and my advice for this week is to do the same with adjectives, nouns, and adverbs.

“It is very humidity in rainy season” x

I’ve heard this a few times over the last week or so and that is because when you look up the word 湿度 or 湿気 in the dictionary you are looking at the noun and not the adjective. English is a bit tricky when it comes to adjectives their noun forms and their adverbs too, so same as last time it’s best to get them all firmly implanted in your brain and then you will have no trouble using them in sentences.

Remember when learning new words it’s always best to remember them in an example sentence rather that just one by one, this way you will get a feel for the way English sentences are constructed and it will help you come up with your own in the future.

みなさんこんにちは、前回のブログで私は動詞の時制をしっかり学ぶことをおすすめしました。私の今週のアドバイスは、形容詞、名詞、副詞も同じようにとにかく頭に焼き付けましょうということです。

“It is very humidity in rainy season” ✖

先週あたり何度かこう言っているのを聞きました。これはなぜかというと、みなさんが“湿度”や“湿気”という言葉を形容詞ではなく名詞で調べるからです。
英語の形容詞、名詞、副詞はというのは少しトリッキーです。
なので前回と同じように、潔く脳に植え付けることが一番です。そうすれば文章の中でそれを使うことに何も問題なくなります。

“It is very humid in rainy season.” 〇

新しい言葉を覚えるときは、いつもその単語だけではなく例文で覚えるのがベストだと覚えておいてください。そうすることで、英語がどう構築されているかが分かってきますし、将来きっとあなたのためになりますよ。
