Hello there everyone, I’m busy thinking about where I might go at the end of this year, and I’ve been looking at reviews on the Skyscanner application. I know this isn’t exactly travel English advice from me today but reading online reviews in English is probably a nice easy way to improve your vocabulary. The reviews are short, written in plain casual, natural English, and they are about a subject you are already interested in.

Here are a few to try.

Hi there everyone, next Monday is Guy Fawkes Day in the U.K. On that day, in 1605 Guy Fawkes and his group tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London!

Today I will show you 3 different ways of using blow up.

  • Blow up ( use a device to destroy something)

Guy Fawkes and his people came up with a plan to blow up the house of parliament in 1605.

  • Blow up ( inflate)

I got really tired blowing up all the balloons for my daughter’s 6th birthday party.

  • Blow up ( become popular)

The new Taylor Swift album really blew up at the beginning of the year.

今度の月曜日、イギリスはGuy Fawkes Dayです。1650年のその日にGuy Fawkesと彼のグループがロンドンの国会議事堂を爆破させようとしたという事件がありました。

For our business English expression this week, I also chose a Halloween related expression and it’s “come back to haunt you”. It can be used in any situation, not only business, and it means to cause problems for (someone) in the future.

ex. For the time being our business is doing very well, but our decision to not expand to Ohashi may come back and haunt us.

今週のビジネス英語表現は、ハロウィーンと関連したものにしました。

トラベル英会話ーon / in / at　時間、場所、階数

Some of my students recently have been having a bit of trouble with in, at , and on.

Today I’ll show you a few different uses of the those prepositions in relation to travel English.

We use on to talk about the floors of say a department store or a hotel

  • “The electronics department is on the 5th floor.”

But we use in for the basement.

  • “The supermarket is in the basement floor.”

We use at connected with a verb to talk about where an action should be carried out.

  • “I’ll meet you at Starbucks.”

  • “Turn left at the second corner.”

We use in to talk about a location.

  • “Where is Starbucks?”

  • “It’s in Akasaka, next to the pharmacy”

今日は、トラベル英会話に関連した例文でそれぞれの前置詞の使い方の違いを紹介していきたいと思います。

onはデパートやホテルの階数を言いたいときに使います。

  • “電気屋は5階にあります。”

ただ、地下を表すときはinを使います。

  • “スーパーマーケットは地下にあります。”

atは、動詞と関連しどこでそれを実行するかという場所を表すときに使います。

  • “スターバックスで会いましょう。”

  • “2つ目の角を左に曲がってください。”

inはロケーションについて話すときに使います。

  • “スターバックスはどこですか?”

  • “赤坂です。薬局の隣です。”

Hi there everyone, after a highly embarrassing, inconvenient, and costly experience with losing all my key last week, I thought I might show you how to report something missing or stolen.

Firstly, if you have lost something in a shop or some kind of facility then you can go to the lost and found counter and report it there.

If you think that your things have been stolen then you should go to the police.

In the U.K if you want to call the police the number is 999.

How to report.

  • Hello, I seem to have lost my wallet.

  • Hello, I think my wallet has been stolen.

  • What does it look like?

  • It’s a black leather Gucci wallet.

  • What was inside it?

  • About 100 pounds and a Visa card.

  • Where do you think you lost it?

  • I think I dropped it when I was shopping.

  • Where do you think it was taken from?

  • I think it was taken from my room.

  • Okay, wait a moment please and we will check if it’s been reported.

Hopefully you never have to use these phrases but just in case!

もしあなたの持ち物が盗まれたという場合であれば、交番に行ってください。

UKでは、警察に電話したい場合、番号は999です。

報告の仕方

  • こんにちは、財布をなくしてしまいました。

  • こんにちは、財布を盗まれました。

  • どんな財布ですか？

  • ブラックレザーのグッチの財布です。

  • 中には何が入っていましたか？

  • 100ポンドとVisaカードが入ってました。

  • どこで失くしたと思いますか？

  • 買い物中に落としたんだと思います。

  • どこで盗られたと思いますか？

  • 私の部屋で盗られたんだと思います。

  • 分かりました、報告書を確認するので少々お待ちください。

Hello again! In my last blog I mentioned that I had lost all of my keys. This was one of a number of very interesting mistakes I made that left me broke!

Broke means to have no money so a good example would be like this.

“I can’t go out this weekend, I’m broke.”
