Company Culture is a word we use in business English and it refers to the attitudes and behaviors of a company and its employees. It is evident in the way an organization's people interact with each other, the values they hold, and the decisions they make.

A great company culture brings the best out of its employees and usually leads to that company’s success. Some companies famous for their good culture are Google, Netflix, Zappos, Starbucks and Kensington of course.

Ok, I’m kidding about the last part, Kensington is of course not as famous as Google, but in Fukuoka at least, Kensington is famous amongst English teachers for our great culture and that’s why we can both attract and keep good teachers for a very long time!

For example,

T: I use Slack to communicate with my coworkers and to keep work-related notes.

In Kensington, we are always striving to improve your learning experience and even though we believe our classes to be really good we also believe that everything can be improved further.

For that purpose a few weeks ago we held our first Kensington feedback session for our teachers. The format is pretty simple, we record one of our classes, all the teachers see it and give feedback, focusing mostly on what we can improve.

We started last Friday with my class, I received a lot of constructive feedback which I feel really thankful for and I’m looking forward to utilizing it in my classes.

Hi there everyone,

I thought this expression was quite timely in that it is totally freezing outside and I have a lot of work to do!

Snowed under, as you probably guessed by now, means extremely busy.

Example

“You up for a few rounds of golf this weekend Jim? “

“No can do I’m afraid, I’m totally snowed under with work at the moment.”

This is one of my favourite expressions, my mum used to say it to me on a daily basis and now I often get the chance to use it on my kids.

Walking on thin ice means that you are very close to being in trouble for something.

Example

This is the third time this week you’ve been late for work! You are skating on thin ice Mr Mastoris!

In our Biz speak today, here are two business related idioms:

eat someone’s lunch To eat someone’s lunch means to out compete or be much more successful than the competitor (in a similar business).

Amazon is eating everybody’s lunch in the online retail business.

A large supermarket that opened in our neighborhood last month is eating the small local store’s lunch.

belt tightening To cut spending to save money, usually during bad economic times.

To survive the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses must do some belt tightening.

Manager:No non essential business trips, Ms Yamamoto. It’s one of the belt tightening measures in these tough times.

Ms. Yamamoto: I totally understand.

誰かの昼食を食べる、とは( 同じようなビジネスにおける) 競合に勝つ、又は競合よりも成功していることを意味します。

Hello everyone, how was the week at work? Are you looking forward to the weekend?

For our everyday English, let’s learn or review two health/diet/exercise related expressions:

Couch potato A lazy person or someone who likes to spend a lot of time sitting on a couch.

A: Morinosuke just watches TV and eats snacks all day!

B: He is a real couch potato, isn't he?

Fit as a Fiddle A fiddle is another word for a violin. If you’re “fit as a fiddle”, you’re in very good health and in good shape.

A: I had a health check up yesterday, the doctor said I’m as fit as a fiddle!

B: Good to hear that, Kaito. Your hard work at the gym is paying off.

Couch potato ：怠け者や多くの時間をソファで過ごすのが好きな人のこと

 A: Morinosuke just watches TV and eats snacks all day!

　（もりのすけは1日中ただお菓子をたべながらテレビを観ているよ！）

 B: He is a real couch potato, isn't he?

　（彼は本当に怠け者だよね）

Fit as a Fiddle：Fiddleはバイオリンという意味ですが、「fit as a fiddle」でとても健康的で体調が良いことを表します。

 A: I had a health check up yesterday, the doctor said I’m as fit as a fiddle!

　（昨日健康診断を受けたんです、お医者さんにとても健康だと言われました！）

 B: Good to hear that, Kaito. Your hard work at the gym is paying off.

　（それは良かったね、カイトさん。ジムで一生懸命頑張ったかいがありますね）

ビジネス英会話 - Put the feelers out / それとなく探りを入れる

This week’s topic will explain levels of interest in English (e.g. keen on, like, love), here is an idiom that can work in tandem with those.

It means to try to learn or find out something in a tentative or quiet way, e.g. ‘We need someone to replace Julie in HR, put the feelers out and let’s see who’s available’.

It’s an idiom that I heard a lot back in England, I encourage you to give it a try as it’s quite a natural phrase.

私の出身地、私自身～講師の自己紹介 - 英語の歴史

Hey guys,

I wanted to write about an interesting part of the history of the English language. The sounds we make for letters have changed over time(as it is changing now). This means that many words share an unclear historical connection.

A good example is the English 't' sound (bite, tonight), as it used to be a 'd' sound (ride, dog). So the word 'ten' used to be 'decem' for the Romans. And that's the meaning behind the word 'December', which means the 'tenth month'. Now, you might be thinking “December isn’t the tenth month you dummy!” But for the Romans, it originally was, they didn't bother counting winter months as there were no crops to keep track of.

So the words 'Ten' and 'December' are descendants of the same word, and that's true for most words in most languages. I think that's really interesting, and I hope you do, too!

今日は英語という言語の興味深い部分について書きたいと思います。文字の発音は時間と共に変化しています（今も変化し続けています）。これは、多くの単語が曖昧な歴史と繋がっている事を意味します。

良い例として、英語の「 t 」の音（ biteやtonight など）があります。これはかつて「 d 」の音（ rideやdogなど ）として使われていました。かつてローマ人は「 decem (ラテン語の10という意味)」を「ten 」という単語として使っていました。そしてこれによると、「 December 」という単語は裏側で「10個目の月」を意味しています。今あなたは、「12月は10個目の月ではないよ、おバカさん！」と思ったかもしれません。でもローマ人は本来、注意しておくべき作物がない冬の時期はわざわざ月をカウントしなかったのです。

その為、「 ten 」と「 December 」は同じ単語から生まれた子孫であり、実際に多くの言語の中の沢山の単語も同様です。私はこれは本当に面白い事だと思いますし、皆さんもそう思ってくれたらいいなと思います！
