Christmas in Australia – What’s It Really Like?

Something that always surprises my students – and maybe it will surprise you too – is that Christmas in Australia feels completely different from the snowy, wintery scenes we see in movies. In fact, when you imagine Australian Christmas, erase the snow, erase the coats, and erase the fireplaces. Instead…think beaches, barbecues, and blazing sunshine.
Let’s take a look at what an Aussie Christmas actually looks like.
A Summer Christmas
Yes, you read that correctly. Christmas in Australia happens right at the beginning of summer, and that changes everything. Instead of cold winds or snowfall, we have temperatures that can reach over 35°C. Most families celebrate the holiday with the doors wide open, fans blasting, and everyone trying not to melt.
But honestly? It’s great. A warm Christmas has its own charm—sunny skies, long evenings, and a relaxed atmosphere.
In my case, my childhood was mostly about going out in the evenings with my family and walking alongside Coogee Beach - that being my hometown. Coogee is a very popular beach for swimming, but I am particularly fond of going there in the evenings and going for a walk. Just thinking about it alone makes me miss the days I lived in Australia.
Food – Barbecues, Seafood, and Pavlova
One of the most unique things about an Australian Christmas is the food. You can have roast turkey or ham…but standing near an oven for hours in summer heat is not fun. So many families choose something a little more refreshing:
Fresh prawns
Cold meats
Salads
BBQ sausages and steak
Pavlova (a famous dessert topped with whipped cream and fruit)
If you ever want to experience the “taste” of an Aussie Christmas, start with a cold seafood platter. That’s true Aussie culture.
Christmas Traditions – Outdoors, Of Course
Coogee Beach
Many Australians take advantage of the warm weather on Christmas Day. Common traditions include:
Going to the beach right after opening presents
Playing backyard cricket with family members of all ages
Having a picnic or barbecue at a park
Driving around at night to see Christmas lights in the neighborhood
These activities all match the Australian lifestyle: outdoorsy, casual, and social.
Santa… in Shorts?
Here’s a fun detail. While traditional Santa still appears in stores wearing the classic red suit, many local events show Santa dressed in a more climate-appropriate outfit: short sleeves, sunglasses, and sometimes even surf gear. He might even arrive on a boat instead of a sleigh!
It’s silly, but it’s a silly thing we all love.
A Different Kind of Christmas Spirit
Even though the weather and traditions are different, the heart of Christmas is the same. Families gather, people relax, and there’s a warm feeling of togetherness—just with more sunscreen and fewer sweaters.
If you ever visit Australia during December, I recommend experiencing a summer Christmas at least once. It’s a wonderful reminder that holidays don’t need snow to feel magical.
