The Value of Human Conversation -Learning English beyond AI-

Hi everyone, welcome back to the Kensington Yakuin blog - as per usual, it’s me, Denny, bringing forth yet another, hopefully enlightening blog post, this time in reference to my and my employers job; that being English conversation!
Something that has become more common in recent years is the use of AI for studying English. Many students now practice writing, grammar, or even conversation with AI tools. There’s no denying that this technology is useful—it’s fast, convenient, and available anytime you want to study. I don’t have an issue with my students using AI as a tool - in fact, it makes my job easier in many respects as it allows me to focus my energy on specific areas in which my students could improve on.
But despite the existence of such a powerful tool, there is still something incredibly important that AI cannot fully replace: real human conversation.
Let’s take a look at why talking with real people—especially teachers—still plays such a big role in learning English.
The Strengths of Studying with AI
AI tools are actually quite good at certain things. They can help students practice grammar, explain vocabulary, and even simulate basic conversations. If you want to check your writing or practice simple questions and answers, AI can be a helpful study partner.
Another major benefit is convenience. You can study at any time of the day, repeat explanations as many times as you want, and practice without feeling embarrassed about making mistakes.
For independent study, this kind of support can be very valuable.
Communication Is More Than Words
However, language is not only about vocabulary and grammar. Real communication includes many small signals that go beyond the words themselves.
When people speak face-to-face, they also use:
Facial expressions
Body language
Gestures
Tone of voice
Eye contact
These elements help us understand meaning, emotion, and intention. Sometimes a sentence can mean something completely different depending on how it is said.
For example, a simple phrase like “That’s interesting” could be genuine curiosity, politeness, surprise, or even mild disagreement depending on the speaker’s expression and tone. Understanding the context as a whole is something that is fundamentally missing in tools such as AI. While it is capable of emulating a conversation, it is unable to apply distinct, unique forms of nuance that constitutes a human being. There are subtleties in all of us that define “us” as a character. We have developed intonations, gestures and body language over many years that essentially form our essence. AI can’t do this, and it’s why human conversation and connection is so important in the process of learning a language.
Teachers - and especially Kensington teachers - bring something unique to the learning process: human interaction. In a conversation with a teacher, students are responding to a real person with real reactions.
Teachers can also:
Notice confusion immediately
Adjust explanations on the spot
Encourage students when they hesitate
Introduce natural expressions that textbooks may not show
Most importantly, teachers help students experience English as a living language, not just a set of rules. I often tell students to treat English more as an art, and not a subject. It is rhythmic, poetic, fluid and expressive, much like that of an artist's brush or an elegant dancer. Language, by its very nature, is our desire to express ourselves in some form. It is our thoughts and concepts made manifest. AI can help you sharpen this to some degree, but it cannot bring out humanity…at least, not yet!
Finding the Right Balance
Of course, AI tools are not the enemy. In fact, they can be excellent for reviewing vocabulary, checking grammar, or practicing writing outside of class.
But when it comes to learning how people actually communicate, human conversation remains irreplaceable. Language is deeply connected to human behavior, emotions, and interaction.
So the best approach may not be choosing one or the other—but using both wisely. Study with technology when it helps, and then bring those skills into real conversations where language truly comes alive.
