TOEIC対策で重要なことは、まずは基本的な能力に焦点を当てること【テスト対策】

今日は、TOEICのスコア目標と、下記についての重要性について書きたいと思います。

1. TOEICを受ける前に基本的な英語力を身に付けること

2. 現実的な時間の中で現実的な目標を設定すること

ケンジントン英会話には、会社から高いTOEICのスコアを取るように求められている生徒さんがよくいらっしゃいます。

通常、ターゲットはだいたい800点で、TOEICの管理者(IIBC)によると、CEFRのB2に相当するレベルです。

B2レベルの方は、明確かつ詳細な方法で、容易に、また自発的にコミュニケーションをとることができます。

まだ経験豊富な英語話者ではないとは言え、B2の方はほとんどの状況で英語の理解が可能です。

多くの場合、TOEICスコア800点を目標としている生徒さんは、B2レベルにはほど遠く、A2またはA1である時もあります。(CEFRのA2とA1は基本的な英語のみを使える方を指します。)

そして彼らはTOEICのレッスンを受講する以外に一般的な英語能力を向上させるためのツールは与えられていません。

問題は、もしあなたが基本的な英語だけ使える方である場合、TOEICのレッスンを受講しても英語レベルを上げるのにほとんど効果がないということです。

分かりやすい例えとしては、中学校の科学を知らずに高校の科学をやろうとするようなことです。

その結果はもちろん、あなたは努力したにもかかわらず、目標スコアを取得できない可能性が非常に高く、ストレスを感じ、英語が苦手であるという感覚があり、それは一般的な英語の嫌悪感として現れます。

従業員のTOEICスコアを必要とする企業様には、まず従業員の基本的な英語の流暢さを構築することに焦点を当て、その次にTOEICで800点を目標とする、より高度な英語話者になってもらうことに重きを置くことをお勧めします。

TOEIC - Focus on basic competency first

Good morning everyone, I have wanted to write something about TOEIC score targets and how important it is to 1) build basic English competency before taking TOEIC and 2) have realistic targets within realistic time frames.

We often get students who say their companies require them to get a high TOEIC score. Usually the target is around 800 which according to the TOEIC administrator is a level equivalent to B2 on the CEFR.

A B2 user can communicate easily and spontaneously in a clear and detailed manner. While not yet an experienced speaker, a B2 user is able to understand and be understood in most situations.

Many times our students targeting an 800 score are nowhere near the B2 level, sometimes they are A2 or even A1 on the CEFR. (A2 and A1 refer to only basic use of English) and are given no tools to improve their general English competency other than taking TOEIC classes.

The problem with that is that taking TOEIC classes will do very little to build up your English level if you are a very basic user of English. A very simple analogy would be trying to do high school science without knowing junior high school science. The result is of course a very likely failure to get the target score regardless of your effort, a lot of stress, a feeling that you are somehow not good at English which also manifests itself with a general dislike of English.

I would advise the companies requiring TOEIC scores of their employees to first focus on building up the general fluency of their staff and then focus on building them up to a more advanced speaker with a target of 800 in TOEIC.
