Your Mistakes Lead to Confidence - On Speaking Languages

Your Mistakes Lead to Confidence - On Speaking Languages

Welcome back to the Yakuin blog everyone, and hope you had a good summer week. As usual, your teacher, Denny, is taking the helm of the Yakuin blog and thank you for reading.

Over the holidays, I reflected on a lot of errors I made in some personal endeavours and also in my professional life. Perhaps I explained things too quickly to a student and didn’t slow it down enough, or in my personal life I may have made a generalization too hastily, thus leading to an incorrect evaluation. As one of my favourite characters likes to say, “In an investigation, assumptions kill” - and it’s largely true. To generalize without enough data leads to false conclusions, and falsehoods never align with the reality of the situation.

But I digress. All of these mistakes are not personal failures nor are they indications of my worth as a person. There’s a very big difference between making a mistake in something and your actual value as a human being. The former is a misstep in a specific context, the latter is inherent in the fact that you are a living being.

We often conflate the two though, and when we do, we lose confidence or hesitate in committing to an action for fear of making mistakes. That’s why I’m here to argue the opposite - mistakes lead you to a sharper outcome, and it connects to your English learning journey, too.

You Are Not Your Errors

Your Mistakes Lead to Confidence - On Speaking Languages

Mistakes are a miscalculation in something, and mistakes are committed by you as the actor, but they are not you, directly. In fact, mistakes are a completely natural part of human living and are fundamental parts of our learning.

For example, if we look at babies - we applaud and cheer them on when they stand up, fall over, pick themselves back up and fall over all over again. They do this endlessly. We cheer them because we identify that they’re trying, failing, and trying again, with the eventual goal of being able to walk. Inherently, we know that mistakes lead to success eventually as long as we persevere.

So why, as adults, do we chastise ourselves for our mistakes? This is a complex and layered question, but I think it is in large part due to how we have structured our societies. We expect great results, we require high scores in tests, and we applaud precision. The problem here is our ego tends to assign our worth or identity to these kinds of feats.

It’s not the correct way to label mistakes however. Mistakes don’t = lower self worth. Mistakes = a part of learning. You eventually learn to get really good at things as long as you continue to train, and mistakes are your body and mind attempting to do things in different ways, and learning that “this is not the correct path”. Think of it like walking through a thick bush. After cutting down enough bushes, you start to see the path. The path is success, the bushes are mistakes.

How Does This Make You Confident In English?

Your Mistakes Lead to Confidence - On Speaking Languages

With enough mistakes, understanding that it’s part of learning, and not attacking yourself over these mistakes, you eventually get better naturally. Some people improve rapidly, others slowly - but the end result is the same: in time, people get good at things.

This builds confidence, and if we define confidence accurately, it’s the recognition that you are capable of doing things. You know you can handle whatever it is you’re trying to handle, mistakes or not. The point is that you’re refusing to give up - like the baby trying to walk.

This is Why You Never Stop Speaking!

Now apply this to learning English. You make basic mistakes first, mix your vocabulary, mix past and future tenses, forget certain words, confuse the subjects, etc. There are a million ways you can make mistakes in a language, because languages are a challenging cognitive process for your brain.

That said, every time you make a mistake and correct it, you’re teaching your mind to move in a different, better and more successful direction.

Over time, this builds up. You get sharper and quicker with your speaking. Listening perks up. Vocabulary expands - and through this, confidence.

Of course, as teachers we’re here to guide and correct you, too. But ultimately the confidence comes from understanding yourself, and understanding that mistakes don’t break you, they build you.

That’s all for today, hopefully this rather complex write up was useful for you. See you in class.
