Hi there everyone, here is another nice idiomatic expression from the U.K. “ full of beans”

Full of beans means to have a lot of energy.

For example we could say….

“ I couldn’t get my kids to go to bed last night, they were still full of beans at 11 pm!”

Or..

“Good morning, how are you today?”

“ Absolutely wonderful thank you.”

“Ooh, you are full of beans this morning aren’t you!”

Cheeky monkey is an expression I use quite frequently in my house to describe my son, who is very much prone to mischief. It’s mostly used to talk about children.

Cheeky monkey (often for kids, a cheeky child)

His mouth is going to get him into trouble one day, he’s a right cheeky monkey.
彼の口のきき方だと、いつか厄介なことになるだろうね、まったく横着なガキだよ。

Today I’ll introduce you an expression most businesses unfortunately experience now and then. The expression is to “cut one’s losses” and can be quite a good idea sometimes.

Cut one’s losses
不採算事業を切り捨てる
abandon a course of action that is clearly going to be unprofitable or unsuccessful before one suffers more loss or harm.
利益を生みそうにない・成功しそうにないことが明らかな一連の活動を、さらなる損失や損害を被る前に中止する。
After years of trying to grow his business English school, John decided to cut his losses and pursue a different career.
ジョンは、自身のビジネス英語スクールを成長させようと数年間努力したのち、不採算事業から撤退し、異なるキャリアを積むことを決めた。

先週の復習ー agreeing and disagreeing

Hi there, I’d just like to recap on the classes last week, they went really well and everyone did really well but I saw a few people struggling with some of the basics.

Here is how we agree with a positive statement. Please remember we don’t always just say me too.

I am cold. So am I.

I like chocolate. So do I.

Notice that we use do in its various forms to agree with verbs and be in its various forms to agree with a statement using an adjective.

Next the negative. Remember we don’t use me too for negative statements. We use Me neither/ either.
I’m not cold. Neither am  I.

I don’t like chocolate. Neither do I.

And lastly, disagreeing, very simply use the subject and the verb to disagree.

I’m not cold.  I am.

I like chocolate.  I don’t.

こんにちは！今日は先週のレッスンの復習をしたいと思います。いいトピックだったと思いますし、みなさん本当によく出来ていました。ただ数人の生徒さんは苦戦していましたね。

これは、ポジティブな賛同を表す言い方です。”Me, too” だけじゃないと覚えておいてくださいね！

I am cold. So am I.

I like chocolate. So do I.

このような形で動詞に賛同する時はdoをいろんな形で使い、形容詞に賛同する時はbeをいろんな形で使います。

次はネガティブな場合です。私たちはネガティブな場面で”Me, too”を使いませんので覚えておいてくださいね。”Me neither/either.”と言います。

I’m not cold. Neither am  I.

I don’t like chocolate. Neither do I.

最後に、賛同しない時の言い方ですが、とてもシンプルに主語と動詞だけです。

I’m not cold.  I am.

I like chocolate.  I don’t.

Last week in the Nishijin school I taught the “ Directions” class. Of course all my guys did a great job but the one thing they weren’t so hot at was ending the conversation.

Here is an example..

“Let’s meet at 19:00 outside the restaurant.”

“Okay.”

…...silence.

Here a few ways you could end a conversation like that.

“Sounds good, I’ll see you then.”

“Great, I’m looking forward to it.”

“19:00 it is then, see you on Friday.”

“Cool, catch you on Friday then.”

These are all phrases for casual conversation, hope they come in handy.

「19時にレストランの外で待ち合わせしましょう」
「オッケー」

終わり方としていくつかこのような言い方ができます。

“Sounds good, I’ll see you then.” 「いいね！また後でね」

“Great, I’m looking forward to it.”　「いいね！楽しみだよ」

“19:00 it is then, see you on Friday.”　「19時ね、じゃあ金曜日に！」

“Cool, catch you on Friday then.”　　「オッケー！金曜にね」

これらはカジュアルな会話に使われます。

“make one’s blood run cold” This means to feel extreme fear. Here are a couple of examples.

The shower scene from “Psycho” always makes my blood run cold.

“ I almost stood on very large snake in Nishi Koen a few years ago. the thought of it still makes my blood run cold”  ( true story)
