Hello there, ever been shopping or eaten out abroad? It can be pretty terrifying actually especially if you are just window shopping or can’t make up your mind what to order.

Here are a few phrases to help you out.

First of all the staff in the shops will almost always ask you

  • “Can I help you?”
  • “No thank you.” is a bit direct so it’s nicer to say...
  • “No, I’m just looking thanks.”

Or..

“No, I’m just browsing thank you.”

If you are waiting for  a staff member and another person approaches you with the same question you can say...

“I’m being served, thank you.”

And finally if your waiter asks you “ Are you ready to order?”

You can say..

“No, not quite.”  

Or

“No, just a moment please.”

Which are much better that a flat “No.”

こんにちは、海外で買い物や外食をしたことがありますか？それって実に怖いですよね、特にただウィンドウショッピングしているだけの時や、思っていた物を頼めない時など。。

あなたを助けるいくつかのフレーズです。

まず始めにほとんどの店員さんがこう言います。

“Can I help you?”　「何かお伺いしましょうか？」

“No thank you.” 「いいえ、結構です。」はちょっと直接的すぎるので、より良い言い方は
“No, I’m just looking thanks.”か、“No, I’m just browsing thank you.”　「いいえ、ただ見ているだけです、ありがとう。」です。

もし、あなたが店員さんを待っている間に、他の店員さんが来て同じ質問をして来たら、
“I’m being served, thank you.”「今、やってもらってます。(サービスを受けています。)ありがとう」
と言いましょう。

最後に、レストランでウエイターが ”オーダーお伺いしましょうか？”と聞いて来たら
“No, not quite.”  「いいえ、まだです。」か、“No, just a moment please.”「いいえ、ちょっと待ってください。」と言います。
これらは、ただNoと言うより断然良いです。

Hello again, Friday seems to come around very quickly and since we are here again it is time for some beautiful British English again!

Today I will show you the word “flog”.

Flog is simply the slang for sell so it is really easy to just replace sell with flog in a sentence like this..

“I’m flogging my old computer off and buying a new one next week.”

“You should get down to the market today, they are flogging off all the summer gear really cheap.”

Hope that comes in handy one day.

Today’s idiom is “Grease monkey” and it means a mechanic.

For example

Travel Englishー U.K festivals

Hi there everyone, some time ago I gave you a bit of advice on some places you should visit if you are ever in the UK today I’d like to tell you about an event that takes place in the capital of Scotland in the summer.

The Edinburgh Fringe festival.

This takes place over 3 weeks in August and it is the world’s biggest arts festival with over 50,000 acts and 3,000 shows including stand-up comedy, dance, live music ,magic, street busking and all sorts more. I’ve been twice and both times were really rather good, especially the stand up comedy. I definitely recommend it,but the only problem you may have is accommodation,so it’s best to book a place to stay well in advance.

このイベントは夏に3週間以上も続きます。スタンドアップコメディ(観衆の前で立ってトークする人)やダンス、音楽ライブ、手品、大道芸などを含んだ5万以上の出し物やショーがある、世界で一番大きなアートフェスティバルです。私は2回行きましたがとても良くて、特にスタンドアップコメディが良かったです。

ここは絶対におすすめなのですが、問題が一つ、、泊まるところです。なので快適に泊まれるところを早めに予約しておくのがベストですよ！

“hard lines”

Hard lines very simply means bad luck so if someone tell you for example that they failed an exam, didn’t get into the company they wanted to or some other such piece of unfortunate news you can very simply say…

“Oh, hard lines”

And there you have it a simple phrase, and one that you hopefully don’t have to use too often.

Here are a few of the more important phrases you need when visiting the hairdressers.

  • Hello my name is Jaimie Wright.I have an appointment at 3 o’clock today.
  • Is this your first time here?
  • Yes, this is my first time here.
  • I see, and what would you like done today?
  • Just a trim please.
  • Just an inch or so off the top please.
  • Can you shave it up the back please.
  •  I’d like my hair permed.
  • I’d like my hair straightened.
  • I’d like highlights please.
  • I’d like my hair coloured please.
  • I’d like it shaved, about 10 millimetres is fine.

There you go, hope that comes in handy one day.
