Hi there everyone, today I would like to show you the word fluke.

Fluke means when something happens by chance or by accident.

For example..

I lost my wallet at the beach the other day. When I went back the following week I found it on a bench nearby. That was a fluke!

The goalkeeper scored a fluke own goal when the ball bounced off his knee.

英語の勉強法ー大事なのは文脈を理解すること

Hello everyone,

Today, I’d like to talk a little bit about context. Even if you’ve remembered many new words; if you do not know how and when to use them correctly, you have not truly learned them.

This is another reason why reading is so important because it gives each word context, and that will help you understand the meaning and use of the word. For example, in the sentence “Kensington is such a great school, the teachers are so competent!” you might not understand the word “competent”, but thanks to the context of the whole sentence, you will know it means “good”.

Context helps us understand when a word is used in formal language or informal language, if it’s slang we can use with friends, or if it is a word that is usually used in written English but not in conversation.

みなさんこんにちは。
今日は文脈のことについて少し話したいと思います。
例えあなたが沢山の単語を覚えたとしても、どうやって、いつそれを正しく使うのかが分かっていなければ、本当に学んだとは言えません。

別の理由として、リーディングがとても重要なのか、それはひとつひとつの文脈が分かるからです。それに、意味を理解したり単語の使い方を知る手助けになります。
例えば、文節では、“ケンジントンは本当に素晴らしいスクールです。講師たちがとても有能です！”　おそらく“competent”の意味が分からないでしょう。でも、全体の文脈のおかげでその意味が“良い”ということは分るでしょう。

丁寧な場面、そうでない場面、友達同士で使うスラングなのか、書く時には使う英語だけれども会話では使わない英語なのか。文脈はその単語がいつ使われているのかを理解する手助けをしてくれます。

or if the traveller starts the discussion.

  • Excuse me, do you know where the Fukuoka Tower is?

Hello there everyone, today we are looking at the business English expression “ ahead of the pack” which means to have an advantage over or be doing better than other businesses. 

A pack is the word for a group of dogs so imagine you were being chased by a pack of wolves, you would definitely want to stay ahead of the pack.

Here are a couple of examples.

If we want to stay ahead of the pack we have to work harder and keep coming up with new ideas.

The company is definitely ahead of the pack when it comes to customer service.

To get something off the ground means to start a project/ business and see it start to be successful ( imagine a plane taking off)

For example.

It took us a while to get the Ropponmatsu school off the ground but it’s getting busier now.
Work on the new building couldn’t get off the ground until planning permission had been given.

Hi there everyone, today is not really English that you would use when travelling, but more like a few common expressions we use when someone is going on holiday.

When someone is about to leave we often say “ bon voyage” which is French but it just means have a good trip. We also say “ Have a safe trip!” You can also use “ Travel safely” or “Take care”

We quite often like to hear when the traveller has arrived at their destination so you can say “ Call me/ Mail me when you get there” 

If someone is taking a long trip and you want them to keep you up to date with what is going on you can simply say “ Stay in touch” or “ Don’t be a stranger.”
